There was a moment back in August when Dale Grey Beard Sanders considered giving up.
In the middle of the 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine, far from help, he was bleeding internally and having heart palpitations not surprising considering that he was 50 or 60 years older than most of the people he had met on the Appalachian Trail.
Sanders called his wife in Bartlett, Tennessee, and she urged him to keep going. With a go-ahead from his doctors, he did, and on Thursday, Sanders, 82, officially became the oldest person to hike the entire 2,190-mile trail in a year.

Are the doctors and his wife all in his will and is he worth millions? What doctor would tell anyone, especially a senior citizen who is bleeding internally and having heart palpitations, to not go get help?

I think this old fellow is asking the wrong people for advice. Sad if true. Maybe he’s the type who needs tough-love every so often and his wife knows that.

3 million a year hike the trail to some degree

You mean the Pacific Crest Trail? There’s also the Continental Divide Trail.
161 and went out 3 times this year hiking about 330 miles or the distance between Harpers Ferry and Roanoke Virginia. Since last year I’ve completed about 600 miles to the trail and it’s become a passion.

He’s braver than I am. People disappear along the trail quite a lot. Frightening phenomenon.
A through hike on the AT is a incredible undertaking for anyone, let alone a gentleman of his age. Enjoy the accomplishment.
