Jimmy Kimmel’s Halloween prank can scar children. Why are we laughing?
Washington Post ^ | October 20, 2017 | Meg van Achterberg

It’s getting to be that time of year again: when jack-o’-lanterns glow and mummies and witches roam the streets. But there is one Halloween tradition that really gives me the chills: Jimmy Kimmel’s annual candy prank.

Every Halloween for the past six years, ABC’s late-night talk show host has encouraged viewers to tell their children, on the morning after the holiday, that they have eaten the kids’ entire candy stash. Parents record their children’s reactions and send the videos to Kimmel, who broadcasts some of the clips on his show.

I laugh at a lot of things. But I just hate practical jokes. I don’t see the humor; I just see cruelty. And I avoid people who engage in practical jokes — they are not the people I want in my life.

Don't lie to your kids.

It is not a "prank". It is not "teasing". It is taking your child's trust and stomping on it.

Knowing Kimmel, he’d probably tell the parents to tell their kids that Trump stole their candy.

The child should show a rubber to the mom and say that it was found in daddy’s wallet. What wacky fun!

I am a stick in the mud. I hate pranks. I see them as entertaining yourself at the expense of someone else.
Yeah, I know. I am no fun. At least my friends and family know not to pull any on me.

One year, after we had gone trick-or-treating, I ran out of candy to give the kids coming to our door. So we turned around and gave my son’s candy out to the other kids.

People have told me that I was cruel to do so. I don’t think so. He got a lot of enjoyment out of giving the candy away. He was only three, but I still remember him handing out his candy to smaller kids, saying, “Here you go, baby!”

But to not have that experience of having your child share his candy—to just tell your kid that you got rid of the candy—yeah, I think that would cause some harm.

I always thought those skits were mean and nasty.
Such blatant schadenfreude, it’s almost sadistic.
Do they think the children will just forget it ever happened?
Some will, many never will.
The child himself may start to wonder “Why is it that I don’t trust Mom and Dad to do what’s best for me? I haven’t in a long time. Where did that belief ever start?”

I liked The Man Show. Especially “Girls on Trampolines”!

These “pranks” are just Kimmel being cruel. His fans are the same way. No one should be surprised.

Kimmel needs to turn in his “Man Card.”

I saw a previous year’s montage that included a mom telling her crying little boy that she was just joking, she didn’t eat his candy. He tearfully replied,”Well that wasn’t very kind!” She wrapped him up in a hug and I hope she saw the error of her ways. But she sent it in so that’s unlikely.

My teenage kids think it’s funny (though they despise Kimmel), but I’d be more positive if the parents used it as an object lesson regarding capitalism vs socialism. Always better to keep what you’ve earned.

I’ve seen these videos before and find them incredibly disturbing. I don’t see the humor in them. And I really get concerned when I see the ones where the kid runs over and slugs or slaps the parent. Why do people think that’s funny? Will they think it’s funny when the kid is 16 and does the same thing?

A practical joke is no joke. It’s an exercise in sadism.

Yeah. That was GOOD. Lots of good chick sequences.

The ziggy zoggy Guy was cool. Drink a beer in half a second. Killed himself doing it though

With what you describe at 16 the kid would be wrapping his parents dead bodies up in trash bags and dumping them in a shallow grave. Unchecked aggressive behavior in children leads to an impulsively violent adult.

My dad loves a show called Overhaulin’. I tried to watch a couple, and they start out by telling the guy they are surprising that his car was either stolen or destroyed so he won’t know they’re working on it. I’m sure he’s in on it, since the overhaul can take anywhere from days to a month, but I don’t like it. He says they’ve gotten away from that, but I’ve already tuned out.

As long as he got to keep a few. I doubt a three-year-old needed a whole bag. In my area, some of our recent arrivals from south of the border take their kids from neighborhood to neighborhood, getting every last bit of candy they can. I don’t get it. Why do they want their kids to have so much? I think they’re teaching them young that if they’re giving you handouts, you take every one you can.
