I took data from SportsMediaWatch.com to look at television viewership at NFL games 2014-2017.
Most of the data in news reports compares same day games from last year to this year, (ie; MNF from one year to the next).
I decided to look at the aggregate of each week's data over the last four seasons to get an idea of trends.
So what you are seeing is the TOTAL viewers for Nationally Televised games, each week, Year-Over-Year(From Thursday Night - Monday Night).
Below is the data for Weeks 1 - 6* of seasons 2014 through 2017.
*Note - week 6 (2017) only had 5 games listed, verses 6 games for each of the last 3 seasons. So I added 8.4 million viewers, as this was the ESPN total from 2016 - no ESPN game total listed for 2017.
godell was doomed when he piked a fight with Brady. at that point it was clear his arrogance knew no bounds and his belief that the brand was forever is his hubris.
pride goeth before the fall the book says.
I quit watching pro ball back in 2000
The chart you came up with provides better information than every single article out there in the mainstream press.
Week to week, you can pick a game and say things are up or down. What counts is the data in the aggregate. Analysts warned this week CBS stock would take a hit this quarter as viewership is down. So far the stock is down 20% from its high in April but still has a PE of 144 - thats insane. If the numbers dont come in I think it could really tank.
I’ve been saying that the New Coke marketing team is thanking the NFL. They no longer own the worst PR disaster ever.
Jags Stadium - Week 6
After their best start in YEARS. Attendance will only get worse from now after stinking up the joint against a bad Rams team that was begging to get beat.

The mainstream press provides information? Ha.
Unlike Peak Oil, Peak Football has come and gone.
If Americans really cared about their country they ratings drop would have been HUGE
Modern Romans must have their circuses
True. But, a loss of 20 percent of viewers. That alone erases nearly 100 percent of profits.
Also, I suspect by mid season any team struggling and unlikely to reach the playoffs could see record low attendance. The league will blame holiday shopping...
The more favorable 2017 totals compared to 2016 in weeks four and five are probably due to Trump’s remarks that drew a lot a curiosity and interest to what would happen after the players began to react to the president. Then the 2017 total falls below 2016 again in week six.
Great information.
And, of coure, the comparison that matters most is 2017 to 2015 which reflects all the decline in audience after Kaepernick and others started their protest stunts in 2016.
