I took data from SportsMediaWatch.com to look at television viewership at NFL games 2014-2017.
Most of the data in news reports compares same day games from last year to this year, (ie; MNF from one year to the next).
I decided to look at the aggregate of each week's data over the last four seasons to get an idea of trends.
So what you are seeing is the TOTAL viewers for Nationally Televised games, each week, Year-Over-Year(From Thursday Night - Monday Night).
Below is the data for Weeks 1 - 6* of seasons 2014 through 2017.
*Note - week 6 (2017) only had 5 games listed, verses 6 games for each of the last 3 seasons. So I added 8.4 million viewers, as this was the ESPN total from 2016 - no ESPN game total listed for 2017.
Jags Stadium - Week 6
The NFL would make could submariners....dive, dive, dive...take her down!
When the Denver Donkeys kneeled, I changed the channel and have not watched a NFL game since then.
But it was cold and raining right?...lol
Thats Awesome !!!
Looks like a 20% drop from the peak. They’ve reinvented New Coke as a marketing strategy.
I hate that Americans have a short attention span and no staying power
“Looks like a 20% drop from the peak. Theyve reinvented New Coke as a marketing strategy.”
Except the New Coke strategy may have worked as plan, which was always to ignite interest in what had become the dull, Old Coke.
This crap has no upside.
Let this sink in for a few months, in the mean time, find something else to do on Sundays.
NFL = hate America
NFL = hate whitey
NFL = Hate
Things have not been going well for a while. I don’t see the precipitate decline unique to 2017 that people are asserting.
BOYCOTT THE NFL!!!!
Look at 2015, best year NFL ever had. Then 2nd week in 2016, things begin to drop. NFL has only had two weeks last two years with 100 million viewers - 2014 & 2015, every week was over 100 million.
That looks like it’s less than half full. Lol
So this is a freeper exclusive chart?
This is very good work, thank you
Thanks for your good work and for posting.
Lots to do.....apart from pro football the NFL ain’t a monopoly. It is fueled purely by discretionary income and time.
Im looking for data on NFL gear sales as well. Will post when I come up with something.
