Gerald McCoy: 'It's Going To Be An Uproar' If Players Forced To Stand
ESPN ^ | 10/11/17 | Kevin Seifert and Michael Rothstein

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, speaking on Adam Schefter's Know Them From Adam podcast, said he thinks there might "be an uproar" if NFL players are forced to stand for the national anthem.

"I don't think guys are gonna like it," McCoy said, when asked about the possible reaction from players. "I think it's gonna be an uproar if that is to happen because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech. If guys wanna have a, I guess you would call it a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away."

McCoy, an eight-year veteran and one of the Bucs' defensive captains, said he does not plan on kneeling during the anthem.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear in a letter sent Tuesday to all 32 teams that he wants players to stand during the anthem. He did not provide specifics about how he intends to ensure it, but he wrote that it would "include such elements as an in-season platform to promote the work of our players on these core issues."

The issue will be discussed during the NFL's regularly scheduled fall meetings in New York next week.

President Donald Trump, who said last month that NFL owners should "fire" players who kneel during the anthem, tweeted early Wednesday morning:

It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY

1)It is not a constitutional right

2) Does anyone know what they are protesting?

It appears to be how they perceive the country they have been so successful in.

Have any of them been to a country where more opportunity exist. I will give them a clue, having to lived, worked and traveled to all but about4 countries in Africa. None of the Black ran countries are successful. Most are "Hell Holes".

They should study American History and even World History and then take a knee to thank God they are living in the land of opportunity!

Dearest espn morons: Shut up. No one with a scintilla of honor and respect for America cares what you say about anything. I laugh at your imbecility.

Give a listen to Lou Dobbs on Hannity (with Mark Simone) this afternoon scorching these punks. Rarely does a talking head use language and terms I couldn’t easily improve upon. Wow. No compromise by Dobbs.

He never said he is going to uproar and he plans to stand. He just said what he thinks will happen.

Well, how about this, McCoy: you guys stand, and show respect, or start looking for work at a moving company (they need guys with large muscles, but don’t place any particular stress on a high IQ or a clean record).

Otherwise, GFY!

I have a feeling that The left is now turning this into a “wage slave” issue, whipping up minority passions to support Socialism...

Rush,Trump, you, and I know that Trump is voicing
his opinion and that he lacks the authority to discipline
players. I think that Rush was cautioning Trump to
be careful about how he comes across to the hoards of
yahoos who think that a president has the same power as
a dictator.

If there is an uproar in a stadium, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Players are in a tough spot.
They can stand and look like Goodell’s slaves.
Or kneel and look like Bill Clinton’s interns.
NFL loses either way.

At light speed I am approaching the "event horizon" of "not giving a damn"

Too many players with their equally idiotic owners have showed their leftist, BLM enabling politics that I don't want to give my time money to.

Sorry, slap me in the face and I'm going to hit back.

The NFL can go fellatio itself!!!

(Sorry Dak, Jason and Jaylon)

maybe someone should sit the players down and explain the whole Reagan/AirTrafficControllers thing. It applies equally well to private industry.

I think there is some possibility that the NFL season may be cancelled after Sunday.

Put that as a percentage. Better have a lot of zeroes after the decimal point

There will be no cancellation, and the boycott numbers are probably stable. Anybody who is not pissed by now will probably put up with whatever they do. I know plenty who are putting up with it.

Next year ticket sales will be the indicator. Too many have already sunk their money for this year.

...Glover Quin, the team's NFLPA representative, didn't want to talk much about Jones or potentially being required to stand for the anthem...He did say, however, that when the NFLPA responds to this, the message will be clear. "The message will be put out," Quin said. "The message, it will be out. Clearly."

This sounds like a threat to me that all black players will kneel or do something else disrespectful. Then it would be on the owners as how to respond. Suppose no disrespectful player plays. There might not be enough players to play the game, so the game is forfeited and the fans leave the stadium PISSED.

Since the threat is league-wide, this could happen in multiple cities.

So, I don't put the percentage very high but I would give it a 5% chance of happening.
