Gerald McCoy: 'It's Going To Be An Uproar' If Players Forced To Stand
ESPN ^ | 10/11/17 | Kevin Seifert and Michael Rothstein

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, speaking on Adam Schefter's Know Them From Adam podcast, said he thinks there might "be an uproar" if NFL players are forced to stand for the national anthem.

"I don't think guys are gonna like it," McCoy said, when asked about the possible reaction from players. "I think it's gonna be an uproar if that is to happen because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech. If guys wanna have a, I guess you would call it a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away."

McCoy, an eight-year veteran and one of the Bucs' defensive captains, said he does not plan on kneeling during the anthem.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear in a letter sent Tuesday to all 32 teams that he wants players to stand during the anthem. He did not provide specifics about how he intends to ensure it, but he wrote that it would "include such elements as an in-season platform to promote the work of our players on these core issues."

The issue will be discussed during the NFL's regularly scheduled fall meetings in New York next week.

President Donald Trump, who said last month that NFL owners should "fire" players who kneel during the anthem, tweeted early Wednesday morning:

It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY

If I was commish i would institute a moment of 30 second silent or spoken prayer before the anthem. Players could kneel or stand for the prayer then need to stand for the anthem. Kneeling is for prayers or resting and not a sign to protest. Flux rebellious lefties.

Nobody is forcing them to work.

If they don’t like the job requirements they know where the door is.

There are plenty of people out on the streets who will do those jobs for far less.

Maybe when this entire kerfuffle is over, Americans who did not learn civics in school will finally learn what rights the Constitution actually guarantees. Schools spend too much of the “social studies” class time teaching that the USA is an oppressor nation. Sadly that is not sarcasm.

because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech

You can't get arrested for your speech.... but there's nothing in the Constitution that says you can't be fired for your speech.

Don't these people understand this simple distinction?

Imagine a Walmart Greeter saying to customers entering the store "Hi folks, welcome to where we sell cheap stuff made by Chinese slave labor and where everything is infected with nasty Chinese bacteria". That employee would be fired pronto... and the Constitution wouldn't protect him one bit.

Is it possible one of the factors at play here is that these rich effete players have never had a real job with expectations and duties in their fat cat lives? They have been pampered from youth and lack life experiences that would inform them of what work place expectations are.

And I am not counting their “employment” by the NFL — expectations there seem to be quite minimal and they can be excused if they have been led to believe they can do what they like.

They are truly being schooled in some harsh business realities — the only hope the owners have is that the players will wake up to the origin of their rich paydays before the owners run out of money to meet payroll.

There is already and uproar and you do not have a clue as to what you are protesting. You better grow up, learn the truth and then you will know that what you are doing is based on lies or you will soon be unemployed.

Yeah; we all want to act like immature assholes when we go to work every day — and expect that there will be no repercussions if we act out. Sheesh. Who the hell do these people think they are?

Rush made a good comment today. These are workplace rules which we all abide by. The players need to abide by workplace rules, like everyone else. No cluster from being mishandled a year ago.

Disagree with Rush, when he says Trump should not dictate what employees do... Hog wash. He gave an honest opinion he didn’t demand it.

I would hope it goes directly the opposite way to leave no doubt the fans are in charge and the players are only there out of our good grace. Let’s see that direct correlation.

Attendance is at record highs.

The networks are taking it on the chin.

Ticket sales are at record highs.

The ticket brokers are taking it on the chin.

I dare say pretty much every NFL ticket was sold (except for the LA Rams at home), but the ones that were not sold to season ticket holders went to ticket brokers, who try to re-sell them at a premium.

Until the league pulls something like this.

A lot of brokers are sitting on a lot of tickets they can't give away. Just look at the number of empty seats at a typical NFL game. All those empty seats have been sold, and every one represents a loss to a ticket broker.

Of course, I have no problem with that, either. A pox on both their houses.

It would probably be much better if we just presented the facts about what is conclusively known about history without all the agenda, but I believe that a lot of kids that are fed propaganda get an eye opening one day and realize that the whole cosmology public schools gave them is a twisted sham and they need to treat information very cynically. It’s a good lesson

Then, Glenn, you (and your bros) ARE admitting it IS ABOUT THE FLAG, ABOUT THE MILITARY AND ABOUT AMERICA!

In that case, please leave America and go to the socialist/communist country of your choice!

No, you don't get to take your cars, your "bling," your "millions" earned in the country you HATE, you get the clothes on your back, PERIOD!

Fine them .5 million bucks every time they disrespect the flag like that and see how many times they do it. When they find themselves owing money to the owner for their obnoxious “peaceful protest” against those who fought and died so they can have the right to disrespect our flag without getting shot in the head out back then maybe that will get their attention.

They can stand and look like Goodell’s slaves.

Funny...I don't recall ever having demonstrated my very strongly held political/societal opinions while on the job.And although I didn't appreciate *all* of my employer's policies I knew what I was earning and I knew where the door was so I *never* felt like a slave.
