Gerald McCoy: 'It's Going To Be An Uproar' If Players Forced To Stand
ESPN ^ | 10/11/17 | Kevin Seifert and Michael Rothstein

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, speaking on Adam Schefter's Know Them From Adam podcast, said he thinks there might "be an uproar" if NFL players are forced to stand for the national anthem.

"I don't think guys are gonna like it," McCoy said, when asked about the possible reaction from players. "I think it's gonna be an uproar if that is to happen because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech. If guys wanna have a, I guess you would call it a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away."

McCoy, an eight-year veteran and one of the Bucs' defensive captains, said he does not plan on kneeling during the anthem.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear in a letter sent Tuesday to all 32 teams that he wants players to stand during the anthem. He did not provide specifics about how he intends to ensure it, but he wrote that it would "include such elements as an in-season platform to promote the work of our players on these core issues."

The issue will be discussed during the NFL's regularly scheduled fall meetings in New York next week.

President Donald Trump, who said last month that NFL owners should "fire" players who kneel during the anthem, tweeted early Wednesday morning:

It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY

Nobody understands how the First Amendment works.

And that is by design.

This is great. The media is talking about the protests as much, if not more, than what’s actually happening during the games. I started following the NFL and NBA in 1971, and I’m a stats junky. I couldn’t tell you one thing statistically about this NFL season or last.

Gerald, a word to the wise . . . when your salary cap goes down it will mean a lot of higher priced marginal players getting the axe . . . don’t bite the hand that pays the freight . . .

The boss can say you must stand and you still don’t have to stand.

Get that, you are still free to not stand.

And the boss is free to take action as your employer if you don’t stand.

But you don’t have to stand, ever.

As far as I am concerned they can kneel all they want, and I have no obligation to watch anymore.

You do what your employer tells you to do while you are on their dime.

Otherwise, you’re free to seek employment elsewhere.

There are enough fans to support the game of football, just not enough to support the NFL. An uproar already happened.

Notice; he’s predicting an uproar, but he’s stated that HE ISN’T going to be part of it. He might just have realized which side of his bread has the butter on it. It doesn’t make ME no never mind. I’m not watching no matter what they do.

NFL players are not stupid; they just have bad luck when they think.

Mr. McCoy, nobody is forcing you to do anything. Don’t wanna stand? You’re free to quit. Put your money where your mouth is.

Haven't you got the memo? They're slaves, and the plantation can't run without them.

(I guess they forgot about being paid millions of dollars a year to stay on the plantation)

Hey Gerald McCoy, go punch your fist in to a swimming pool and pull it out real fast, see that hole you left in the swimming pool, yeah, that’s the same hole you will leave in the NFL when you leave.

Keep in mind Gerald, there is always someone out there willing to what you do without the same conditions you have...Let that sink in holmes....You are a player in a game.

McDonalds has tried out robots on a number of those jobs, and wherever $15 an hour is demanded, the robots will move in.

What these players are doing is known as crapping in your own nest.

The real damage to the NFL will become more apparent as the teams that no longer have a shot at the playoffs see their home attendance drop dramatically. The NYG, LA Chargers, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, et. al. will see their fans stay away in droves.
