My apologies. I tend to come on full bore when it pertains to issues close to my heart, namely marriage and family. But I will make a better effort to understand what the poster is actually saying!

I always thought Jerry was a jerk. Seems I was right. The beautiful Patti would sit in the audience during one of those marathons where toward the end Jerry would put on a show of sickening, fake tears and all the while I wondered if Patti’s tears were for his unselfish works for Muscular Dystrophy or the fact that he was a jerk way back then. I’ll always wonder........

Bing Crosby’s first wife died of cancer while married. Their sons got money from the wife’s estate and Bing Crosby married a much younger woman and started second family.

Heh, I hear ya. I feel like I have to roll my eyes at myself sometimes. Those are valid vital issues to go to war over!

“As I understand it, in most jurisdictions, it’s perfectly lawful to disinherit a child.”

Yes.

“However, if the decedent disinherits his wife, partially or completely, she can usually elect to take against the will and claim her intestate share.”

Only in a few jurisdictions - and many states are Community Property jurisdictions, so you can disinherit your spouse from your half, but not THEIR half.

However, in this case the mother of those kids is the EX wife, so entitled to nothing in ANY jurisdiction.

One of my Great * many grandfathers left a will where one of his sons only got $1. He then went on to explain that he’d given the son a lot of other funds and support during his life and so there was nothing else for him. The rest of the estate was split among the other kids.

Felt it was fair if things were as stated. No clue what all happened in Lewis’ family affairs and frankly not interested enough to dig into it.

They may be wonderful people...but possibly they weren’t to him.

Of course, none of us know either way about what kind of people those “kids” (he was over 90, so they are likely in their 60s and 70s) are to the rest of the world, let alone how they acted towards him. Maybe none of them gave him a call for the last 40 years? Maybe their mother was full of poison towards him, and injected that poison into her/their kids? Or maybe Jerry was just a POS? We can’t know, and may never know.

I think that the “Mommy Dearest” story was all about revenge, and making a few bucks because Mommy disinherited the child/author. We may see that in the next year or so.

No matter what the facts, this is sad. I wouldn’t wish this kind of family life on anyone.

Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin fell out in about 1954 or so. Dean had had it with Jerry and his totally taking over the partnership and the act. Dean walked away from about $12 Million in deals they had in place just to get rid of Jerry.

Dean Martin was also a lot smarter than Jerry and Sinatra in investments. Dean was buying up as much Southern California Real Estate as he could at one point, then developing it. He once said the money he made in entertainment was his spending money, the real money was his other investments. When he died it was found Dean Martin had over $100 Million in Liquid Assets, this on top of everything else.

Jerry Lewis had made a lot of bad investments and I doubt his estate is that big, will be interesting to see the details.

When he left his wife Patti I guess that included his kids to.

By many indications, Jerry Lewis was a bitter, grudge-holding prick.

Does your opinion come from personal knowledge and interaction with Jerry Lewis or are you typically reacting to all the crap the MSM is feeding you?

His money, his business.

That was my thought. Wasn’t it his right to leave - or NOT leave - his money to whoever he wanted to?

or the present wife and adopted dtr did some very bad things to have daddy dearest leave everything to them...

my husbands father is still alive and I believe he could do the same...men who get to be that old with some dementia and paranoia can do some very horrible things...

they can claim alienation by wife number two and the adopted dtr....

I've seen this happen in other ways..

a I had an elderly pt who had two children...

the elderly woman had a gay son who just forbade us from allowing the dtr to see her mother...

demanded it...

he didn't want to share her money....

You may have the facts wrong. i don’t know that Lewis hung out with the Rat Pack and the fact that it was well known that he and Martin didn’t see or talk to each other may prove it.

What did you “hear” about alcohol? What is the source?

I appreciate your insider information.

There’s clearly a story there. Poor man. He did a lot of good during his life, but like all of us, he was flawed. May he rest in peace.

That’s a serious charge to make. His daughter Patty talked with a magazine once (I don’t recall which one) in which she said that she had been angry, enraged at him (his politics) for years, but when he passed, she couldn’t remember why she had been seething for all those years because the memories of her childhood had been pleasant. She included a picture of him dancing with her when she was a child, he looking dapper and handsome as always in a suit, if I remember correctly, holding both her hands as she stands on his feet. It’s a very cute picture. He’s laughing adoringly and she’s smiling up at him. One picture doesn’t summarize a childhood, but she did say she couldn’t remember why she was mad all those years.

And maybe that reason was that (as a cheating scumbucket who had always neglected his family before getting a divorce and marrying his mistress) his children before his second marriage made him feel like he was a piece of $h!t. Possibly trying to hide from that feeling drove the telephone.

Nobody said he didn’t do this for a reason.
The reason was pretty plain and predictable.
