Mosquito bites are bothersome enough, but when you consider risks, like getting sick with Zika, dengue, or chikungunya,
its important that you choose an insect repellent that works well and that you feel comfortable regularly using.
Protect yourself when traveling: Learn about country-specific travel advice, health risks, and how to stay safe by visiting CDC Travelers Health website.
Use insect repellent: Use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent with one of the following active ingredients.
When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
DEET
Picaridin, also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
IR3535
2-undecanone
Cover up: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
Keep mosquitoes outside: Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens.
If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net.
Learn more: Travelers can learn more about mosquito bite prevention in this fact sheet[924 B](available at the CDC website).

Used by more Park Rangers at the Everglades than any other solution.

I’m so old I remember hunting deer in the Everglades and eating swamp cabbage.
I counsel my patients to apply DEET before their plans even land. Would hate for them to get bitten by a mosquito while walking across a tarmac while deplaining

Any citation for that?
Any number of attractive blooming plants are insect repellent, several herbs too. Assuming you’re not allergic you could put some lavender, lemon verbena, lemon basil, citronella grass and such in planters by your door, pinch off a handful when you go out and rub it on your exposed skin.
Guess when billy rucklehaus banned DDT they also destroyed the formula for it? I’m sure 3M or evil Monsanto or some other chem company would be more than happy to whip up a bunch. Are we that stoopid? Yeah, probably. I suppose it was the glow-bull warming of the day. Sadly millions have died thanks to ecowankers misguided crap.
From personal contact with the Rangers from over 30 years ago and then there is this.
I needed an anti-aircraft gun on my first visit to Flamingo Point as the mosquiotos there have tail numbers.
25% DEET, has worked for me against black flies too
I highly recommend using herbs/ and botanicals over chemicals.
Herbs are a common practice whenever gardeners get to exchange plants.
Another vector control for mosquitoes are bats, but most people have a negative image of their usefulness, but
I have read that bats will consume 3500 mosquitoes each night.
I welcome their assistance in mosquito control, also.
Here in Florida, after the hurricane, the mosquitoes have organized themselves into air squadrons....
I understood that the Florida State Bird - ...was the mosquito ! No ?
We spend a lot of time in Florida so I appreciate the tip. Some people’s skin seems to attract bugs more so than others. My ankles get it the most.
Have a bottle of that myself, works
The primary attractant for mosquitoes is carbon dioxide.
I did not know that !!
Thanks for the information and the 'heads up" warning !!
I thought it was the Minnesota state bird?
However, you DO have to put DEET in your hair and on your hands/face and other non clothed parts.
