If Drake looks smug and Dave Grohl looks a little stricken in the photos above, there's a good reason: Nielsen tracking indicates hip-hop and R&B have officially become the most dominant form of popular music in the United States for the first time ever.
As HuffPo reports, the reason for hip-hop's supremacy25 percent of the retail music market over 23 percent for rockmay not be a big surprise.
The reason for hip-hop and R&B overtaking rock is simple: online streaming. When it comes to album sales, rock continues to dominate, claiming 43 percent of physical album sales and 37 percent of digital album sales.
But R&B and hip-hop have come to utterly dominate the online streaming market, where they make up 29 percent of all songs streamed online ― thats almost the exact same amount as rock and pop combined.

Hip-Hop ain’t music. It’s a bass drum and crappy poetry.
Hip Hop Rap is Aural Excrement...
Rock n’ Roll died with the advent of grunge in the 1990’s.
Personally, I think it has no redeeming social value whatsoever.
You mileage may vary...and I don't care.
It's my ears that are assaulted by that crap.
And YES!...I know exactly what "wigger" means.
If you want an example of one...google up Sean King.
Or Rachael Dolezal.
'Nuff said.
Hip hop has relatively little melody and harmony. You could say lt lacks music. And then there’s the uncouthness.
I remember my young son playing with a keyboard in radio shack. I asked him if he liked playing music. He said he liked the dog sounds it made.
It’s all about the audience.
A primal beat. Works on stupid people every time. The dumber we get, the more primal beats takes over.
RAP: Retarded African Poetry.
I can't but neither could I post a link to an example of really good baroque music.
Beat and rhythm are important... words, not so much. What constitutes good music is situational and can be said to affect the emotion of the listener in a way that achieves the listeners goals. Good workout music is very different from good dinner music.
No. Hip Hop and Rap are just noise created by people of extremely limited ability for a demographic with an average IQ of 85. Unfortunately, the media and marketers have made it chic to identify with that dysfunctional part of the population, so suburban kids buy that garbage to be “cool”. It is utterly degenerate crap that requires producers, but NO musical ability.
Yeah, a real musician, just like Paul Desmond or Oscar Peterson. You taste is all in your mouth.
Just give it up. Recycled leftist pap about values being “situational” is so 1960s and utterly inane.

I've been a music fanatic since I was a kid.And my attitude toward music has always been that if a song was worth owning it was worth owning in its purest form.So for years I bought LPs and Pre Recorded tapes (the big reels). Then came CDs and,as I said,my discovery of CD-Rs and my local libraries which, among them, have tens of thousands of music CDs of every imaginable genre.
My project took a while...lots of hours at the computer...lots of trips to the libraries....lots of blank CD-Rs bought but I'm glad I did it.
I'm now only partially done converting the CD tracks I have to MP3s that I can play on my cell phone and in my car but winter's coming and that's the best time to be in front of a computer.
>>What happened to Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tschaikowsky?
What happened to Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael?
What happened to Shakespeare, Goethe, Milton, Heine, Dante, Petrarch, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky?
<<
They all are dead.
Ugh
UNGA BUNGA BUNGA!!!
LOLOLOL!!!!
I would bet alot has to do with bogus categorizing of music. Seems most stuff on top 40 is called “rr” for the last 50 years, but if the artist is black, somehow it’s just rb (black music). It’s absurd. Even worse is pretending there is a category of “pop”, which is stupid because it means popular, and thus WHATEVER kind of music is popular, is popular! How is that a category of type?
Whenever I hear that crap I wonder if I accidentally ended up in a ghetto.
