Sequels, Reboots And Remakes Are Bombing In 2017 — Is 'Franchise Fatigue' A Reality Or A Buzzphrase?
Movie Pilot ^ | July 5, 2017 | Ricky Derisz

Each month brings a fresh headline containing Hollywood's favourite new buzzphrase, "franchise fatigue." As big-budget sequels from The Mummy to Transformers: The Last Knight stutter to a halt, the consensus reached by news coverage suggests a collective, audible yawn from audiences, as they grow weary and tired of recycled and repackaged films. But is franchise fatigue really a pressing issue for movie studios to address, or is it nothing more than a buzzphrase, a product of anti-franchise bias?

The full story of #boxoffice trends is complex and impossible to define in two words alone (lucky for you, this article has almost one-hundred times more). There are a whole host of factors in play: domestic performance, international success, profits made in comparison to the film's budget, marketing costs... it's dizzying, isn't it? In an attempt to find answers and quash the vertigo, I spoke to Doug Stone from Box Office Analyst, who has jumped headfirst into the ocean of numbers to make sense of it all.

Before we share Doug's findings, it's worth exploring why the term has surfaced in the first place. A significant majority of the top-grossing movies in recent years were created from the foundation of an already-existing concept or shared universe, and while sequels and reboots have been a part of Hollywood for years, franchises have elbowed their way to the front of the blockbuster queue, and stubbornly dug their heels into the ground. Their consistent rise in popularity has been helped by the boom of comic book adaptations and the super-profit serum of the MCU, which has made Disney almost $12 billion from 15 movies since 2008.

I have a great idea for a Hollywood studio. Re-make Casablanca. But make Rick a transgendered Black who has relationships with both Ilsa and Strasser. That would introduce another level of conflict to the move. Cast Jar Jar Binks as Sam to bring in the Star Wars fans.

Think of how many movies wouldn’t get made today. Animal House is one that comes to mind.

Don't forget one of the greatest films of all times - Blazing Saddles.

The problem was not going to see a franchise which I would have done and have done every year until this year.....the problem for me was Hollywood liberal fatigue. It seemed an absolute horror to give one of those liberal actors or directors money.

Why would I support someone with my money who wants me and my country destroyed. I miss the entertainment a little but not that much.

Here’s a clue: the public isn’t buying the unoriginal, politically correct cocaine-fueled garbage you dirty little Hollywood weasels are selling. Imagine that. No, wait. You don’t have any imagination. Never mind.

How about just make new, original movies? It's not like there's a lack of material out there. You could mine Dean Koontz or James Rollins novels for years if it's action/adventure you're looking for.

For grownups, there are movies like Dunkirk.

IMO a well done depiction of the Civil War battle of Shiloh like Midway would be a great movie. However, the PC and snowflakes wouldn't like it.

The Santa Claus Bank Robbery would make a great movie.

They did that once with Barry Bostwick. It wasn’t a bad effort but they completely screwed up young Washington’s early adventures in the Ohio Valley. They for no reason introduced the fictional frontier guide Caleb Quinn (played by Lloyd Bridges) for the real frontier guide Christopher Gist. Gist and his sons were important players on the Allegheny frontier and deserve to be remembered! It was unforgivable making that change.

When every villain is the White Male and every hero is an victim group it pretty much ends the suspense.

A Washington trilogy.

You know they would have George and TJ exchanging slaves and raping them. That would be the ONLY way they could make it.

That’s one of the problems with Hollywood. They can be “oh so politically correct” lose money in the USA. Those PC anti-American, anti-white, anti-Christian insults don’t have much meaning outside our borders, in fact they might help. So that’s where they make their money - OCONUS!
Lose it domestically being “artistic” make it back OCONUS.

Yeah right. I look forward to seeing Dunkirk in July, All Saints in August, Thank you for Serving and Marshall in October, and many others. There’s tons of good movies that are released every year...I clearly remember 13 hours and Hacksaw Ridge last year among many others so not sure why you are lying.
