A 19-year-old aspiring YouTube stars boyfriend is dead after she shot him in the chest in a video stunt gone wrong...
Norman County Sheriff Jeremy Thornton said in a statement that Monalisa Perez of Minnesota was arrested after she shot her boyfriend Pedro Ruiz III, 22, in the chest. According to court documents, she shot him with a gold Desert Eagle .50 caliber handgun considered one of the most powerful pistols in the world in the grass outside their home while he held up a hardcover encyclopedia to block the bullet.
They set up a GoPro camera on the back of a car and put another camera on a nearby ladder on Monday evening. Once they were filming, Perez picked up the Desert Eagle and shot the book Ruiz held in front of his chest. The bullet traveled through the book and hit Ruiz in the chest.
Perez then called 911 at 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday to report the she had accidentally shot her boyfriend in the chest, according to court documents. He was pronounced dead at the scene of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Ruiz had practiced shooting books and showed off one that a bullet did not penetrate in order to convince Perez.
...
Perez, who shot Ruiz from about a foot away, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, according to court documents. She faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of $20,000.
...
According to the YouTube videos the couple made together, they have a 3-year-old daughter and Perez is pregnant with their second.

Wow! Who needs Kevlar? We should just have our soldiers wear books. Maybe even those old textbooks that schools no longer use!!
I wouldn’t spend a nickel of the public’s money prosecuting one moron for killing another in such an idiotic way.
Just chalk it up to, “Too stupid to live.”
Process of natural selection?
Right about now, he’s very disappointed about not getting that award.
Espera, hold mi cervesa!
They can look it up on their iFag phone and argue with you all day!
I wouldn’t try it with all 26 volumes.
Cool. Thanks.
The .50 was my favorite and most fun to shoot in the Army.
A Desert Eagle? Hell, a CZ-52 could go through that.
If their parents had been deported this wouldn’t have happened.
#29. Re “Hey mom, why does the Encyclopedia have a big hole in the middle of it”?
Reply: For the same reason you father had a big hole in his middle.
Damned! What a stupid tragedy. What the hell were they thinking? What a waste of life - his, her’s, and the child’s mental health in the future.
Life insurance company may not pay up on this one.
Kids. They think they know everything.
Might have been a better choice to have *read* the volume, rather than using it for kevlar.
My thoughts too on the Darwin Award, except that the story indicates the idiot had already reproduced and had a second child on the way. To get a Darwin Award you must remove yourself from the gene pool without reproducing.
No, most likely she shot books that were not back stopped by a 160 pound guy holding them to his chest. An un-backstopped book will move a lot more easily WITH the impact of the bullet as the foot-pounds carried by the weight/speed of the bullet are transferred to speed/weight of the book movement, absorbing the kinetic energy moving the 5 to 6 pound encyclopedia volume, most likely enough so the book after being knocked several feet backwards, that when our teenage YouTuber picked it up, the book still had the bullet imbedded pages deep in it.
Mythbusters found that multiple layers of paper could act as an impact absorber, but were far less effective when a hard backing supported the paper. A back stopped book being held in place against a more immovable objectsuch as a massive human body won't move in response to the impact, so the kinetic energy is instead used for penetration. The boyfriend held the book, preventing it from moving, so the bullet was only marginally slowed because little kinetic energy was transferred during its passage through the backstopped, essentially immobile book, leaving lots of foot-pounds to kill the backstop.
What on earth could they be thinking?
More like “play stupid games, lose stupid life.”
He must have held the pages too tight... just trying to fire through one sitting loose will stop a bullet, but tightly held, no way.
For those trying this at home, use the online version of the encyclopedia.
Stupid is as stupid does...
That would be the "holey" Koran.
