Our oldest is meeting up with some friends, and we thought we might accompany him. Our youngest is eleven. My concern is the summer heat (we're from "up north") and family activities. Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

NASA, great museums, and any other place that has air-conditioning.

I hear the Big Easy ex-pat reunions there are memorable.

You’re crazy. Houston is rapidly surpassing Chicagostan in population. It’s a global alpha city - tons of restaurants, bars, entertainment and it’s actually relative safe.

It’s pretty gay there. And hot as 300 Hades.

What is your idea of a good vacation is the obvious first question. I have lived in Houston on two occasions, live north of Austin now.

NASA, Museums. An old school style amusement park in nearby Galveston (don’t go there for the beach).

Bad part is it’s hot as frick and traffic is terrible - all day every day. Rush hour is Los Angeles-style terrible.

It’s worth going overall though. There’s Six Flags there. Astros.

Not sure I’d choose to fly there though. Not sure where you’re from.

Galveston has a lot of history and some great older buildings and stuff along the Strand. Pleasure Pier; Moody Gardens; is an hour drive from Houston and worth a day or two.

Galveston has about the crappiest beach in the country and I would not go in the water there.

Hot and muggy in the middle of the Summer.

Been there, done that. How about going to the beach to cool off? I don’t mean West of the Mississippi either. Gulf Shores or Orange beach is okay. I prefer Okaloosa island, myself. Pensacola has the Naval Aviation Museum I highly recommend and Peg Leg Petes in Pensacola has great seafood.

went to work in Galveston for a week late July one year. Was walking every day. The guy I worked with said, let’s walk after dark. We agreed on 8:30. Opened the motel door and thought someone put a hot wet blanket over me. We went to lunch each day and the local guy dropped us at the door of the restaurant so we wouldn’t have to walk from where he parked the car. The plane from houston had no ACV working. Worst 7 days ever. i lived in central forida on year and Galveston was the worst.

I’m 53 and from Colorado. Last year, my wife and I had a short window to use some free airline tickets and chose Galveston. We stayed near NASA and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world! Take the full tour, trust me. It was kind of a bonus, after spending a half day there, we went back to our hotel and caught APOLLO 13 on TV. Anyway, the area seafood restaurants were good and the locals were all really nice and down to earth. We then went to Galveston for a few days and had amazing oysters. Do it up!
