A doctor has revealed the secrets behind the “world’s healthiest village”– and there it all comes down to eating less sugar.

Cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra – who describes himself as a former sugar addict – has spent years studying the reasons behind rocketing rates of heart disease and obesity in Britain.

Key to his research were residents of the village of Pioppi, in southern Italy, where diabetes is unheard of and many live to over the age of 100.

How to live to 100... in eight simple steps

1 Eat your greens – no fewer than two portions of vegetables at least twice a day

2 Eat 10 eggs a week because they fill you up and are rich in protein

3 Take a handful of nuts – the original super food every day

4 Eat a small portion of extra virgin olive oil every day

5 Don’t be afraid of fat, but sugar and refined carbohydrates, like white bread, are the enemy

6 Stop counting calories as they do not reflect nutritional value

7 Keep active – walking is best and exercise should be for health not weight loss

8 Once a week fast for 24 hours if possible

My life changed last year, divorce, my diet has drastically changed for the better, no sugar is a big part, kids are with me for the summer and I picked up some ice cream and cookies. I was really surprised the effect sugar had after not having any for a while. Outstanding/noteworthy list.

My banana bread breakfast this morning has both. Oh well.

I thought the healthiest, longest lived people were supposed to be in some part of Japan, and it was because they ate a sweet potato high in hyaluronic acid.

Before that, in the ‘70s, it was the Hunza people.

The most tragic thing is to desire a long life on earth just to lose out on an eternity in heaven because one refuses to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Once one accepts Christ, desiring a long life on earth is not even on the list of one’s desires.

It would be like wanting to spend more time at the bus stop in 30 below zero weather instead of hoping the bus shows up early today or at least on time.

I remember back in college in the 70s seeing an interview by an anthropologist in a remote Andes village with a man who was reputed to be well over 100. Speaking through an interpreter he asked the man what his secret of living so long as the man was digging potatoes. The old man asked why he wanted to know. “So I can tell other people and they can live as long as you”. The old man thought about that and said “Why would anyone want to be as old as me?” then went back to digging his potatoes.

>> “ just to lose out on an eternity in heaven because one refuses to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior.” <<

That is a massive over-simplification!

The “acceptance” of our Lord and savior is described in detail in John’s first epistle. It is definitely not the utterance of the imaginary, non-biblical prayer of magical salvation proffered by most churches.

Peter, Paul, and John take great issue with the idea of that foolish prayer that leads millions to eternal destruction.

3. Take a handful of nuts – but keep the other hand up covering yourself against a potential counterpunch...

Na, being a Christian doesn’t mean being eager for death to come sooner so you can get to heaven. God put you here once to enjoy this place, so enjoy the gift as long as you can. Wanting to die early is like breast reduction...it’s slapping god right in the face.
