Dramatic video shows alleged road rage incident on California highway

Southern California police are searching for a motorcyclist who was involved in an alleged road rage incident that injured one person on Wednesday.

Around 5:45 a.m., witnesses driving southbound on State Road 14 near Newhall Avenue in Santa Clarita, California, filmed an altercation between the motorcyclist and the driver of a silver sedan, according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Joshua Greengard.

In the video, the motorcyclist appears to try to kick the sedan on the right. In response, the sedan veers to the left and briefly collides with the motorcyclist before losing control and crashing into the highway divider wall.

The momentum from the crash sent the sedan toward the middle lane of the highway, where it collided with a white Cadillac pickup truck, causing the truck to overturn.

claim that the driver of that sedan was startled by the motorcyclist kicking the driver’s side door with enough force to dent it and lost control of the car as a result.

That's what it looked like to me....

I suspect intent on the part of the driver of the sedan but on the basis of the video there is no evidence of this.

“More than likely what happened is the car passed the biker shoving him to the edge of the lane.”

Biker was in fast lane and had just passed camera car when sedan moved from commuter to fast lane cutting off biker.

Side issue. People who are in the carpool lane and going sower than the lanes to the right shouldn’t be in the carpool lane.

One thing I don’t like about Cali’s carpool lanes is that they are “limited access” by double lines. If you happen to be slower than a car behind you, he ends up riding your bumper (and thinking bad thoughts about you and your parents) and you can’t do the decent thing and move to the right and let him go by.

“Kicking a car at 60 does absolutely nothing to the car besides dent it. Your foot can’t push car around.”

Kinda hard to ignore a dude knocking your door in at 60 mph on a crowded freeway.

You can’t outrun the biker and if you pull over he might shoot you or beat the crap out of you.

Just drove through California, on a Friday night into Saturday---what a disaster. Full madness from San Fran through to the deserts.I can't even imagine what it is like weekdays and rush hour.

A horrible quality of life, dealing with that everyday.

What was ever wrong with a big, empty, wealthy country? Was a promise of $1000 a month in social security payment really worth this? Because this sucks.

I agree.

And I oppose car pool lanes.

So true. He was the real victim in all this. I was amazed that little car could cause that big truck to go sideways then flip like that but I guess it’s fairly light in the back end with nothing in it.

This must happen all the time to motorcyclists. They are hard to see, and they zip around traffic, often in blind spots.Yes, it's hard to stay safe on a motorcycle in traffic. I've been riding for 40 years without ever having an accident with a car, so I suppose I am somewhat qualified to talk about this topic.

It is always best to assume, as a motorcyclist, that cars don't see you, won't see you, or can't see you. The don't see you because they are not looking, the won't see you even if they do look because you are not a car, which is what they are looking for. They can't see you because they are impaired in one or more ways.

Therefore, 100% of the responsibility for avoiding accidents while on a motorcycle lies with the rider.

For instance I honk at cars pulling out of driveways and turning left, even when they appear to be looking at me. The maybe are in the "won't see me" class. Can't take the chance. So I Honk.

Some people seem to hate motorcylists, not many but they are out there. We don't know exactly what happened, but from the witnesses description it does sound like the cyclist was acting appropriately. He was in the fast lane, which is actually separated from the main freeway by a big, bumpy "Do not cross" yellow line. It's pretty clear that if you *are* crossing that line you need to be extra cautious of the cars on the left, which have the right away.

So dummy in the silver car at minimum was not driving well, and cut off the Scooterist, which can be a rage-inducing event when you think "that guy almost killed me". Because of the "Won't see" effect it may have appeared to the Scooterist that the silver car looked right at me, which in normal circumstances one would interpret as "he tried to kill me on purpose".

In fact what happened is that Silver Car's brains's pattern recognition was looking for a large object in the lane and litterally didn't see him even though he looked that way because he didn't "match" the "pattern" that he was looking for.

If a motorcyclist cannot handle that kind of traffic, he should drive a car instead. Yeah. And if you can't handle your emotions you shouldn't drive at all. Scooterist was very wrong to kick at the car. First: it's incredibly dangerous, your foot could get caught in the bumper and ripped off easily. That was bone headed.

Dummy in the Silver Car, acted even worse, attempting homicide in retaliation for someone bumping his car.

Imagine you have first in line at a red light and you have stopped with the nose of your car protruding into the crosswalk. Someone angrily walking across the street slams his hand into your hood -BAM! - denting it.

If your response is to instantly *hit the gas* running the miscreant over and killing him you would be acting exactly like this DSC (Dummy in the Silver Car) does in this video.

If the person you were trying to kill jumped out of the way but your car crossed into the intersection and smashed into a truck flipping it, well it's still your damn fault.

Someone smashing your car does not exhonorate you going into attempted murder and drive like an ass mode, at least it should not.

Because there is a motorcycle involved, and the generally low opinion many have of motorcyclists, I think many people will not see this, and place all the blame on the Scooterist, when, in fact, it is shared with the larger part resting on DSC.

Excellent analysis, Jack Black.
Completely concur about others looking at you yet not essentially seeing you.

Same thing happens with bicyclists.
Descending a smooth hill in the Rocky Mountains at 45 mph and someone will pull from a side street as if you're only doing 8 mph because that is what *they* did on their bicycles decades ago.

>You can’t outrun the biker and if you pull over he might shoot you or beat the crap out of you.

It’s not enough of a reason to try and kill him by smashing him into wall. If that biker hadn’t hit the wall at just the right angle to bounce off he would have been dead. That was attempted murder without a threat of deadly force to justify self defense in that manner.

And just to be clear the biker was a massive idiot for kicking the car. In no way was the property damage he inflected justified and he was asking to lose control of his bike and die from doing it.

BS. Over a dozen times I’ve had people try to merge into me while riding a bike and I always ride at the speed limit. Cars drivers ignore than you’re there which makes riding a lot more dangerous than it should be. I’m not responsible for someone failing to look over his shoulder before merging.

Haha... that would explain a few things. She's still on the wrong forum. She should be over at DemUnderground where she belongs. How she has managed to keep from getting zotted here is a mystery.

Yeah, I didn't phrase it just right. What I was trying to say is that car drivers just don't see or understand motorcycles. Of course they are fully responsible when their bad driving causes accidents, but as a rider I practice "hyper-defensive" driving, and basically assume that if they can find a way to kill me, they will, and therefore ride accordingly. I'm 100% dedicated to keeping myself safe, and I don't expect even normal behavior from cars, much less courtesy.

This whole incident started with the jerk driving the car doing exactly what you are talking about: merging into the rider (in a limited access lane, on top of it). My response would have been: figures, another idiot car driver. And get away from him, either by slowing way down, or getting out of his lane.
