This has been a tough week. The shooting, the incredibly crass reaction of the democratic party to it. I have found myself getting and staying angry.
That means, or so it seems to me; it is a good time to sit back with a bowl of popcorn and watch something funny.
This may be the funniest movie to come out of the PRC in 20 or 25 years. There have been several US versions of this (Meet the Fokkers) as well as one from South Korea but this one is better. It is really funny.
This also shows the standard of living of the upper middle classes in China. It is no longer a primitive place where people live in mud huts. It is also interesting because of the subtle disparagement of the Chinese government that takes place throughout the film (Incompetent police, petty & corrupt officials)
This is a movie that could not currently be made in the US because of the PC atmosphere. It reminds me of US comedies from the 1960's and 1970's
It is in Mandarin with English subtitles but a lot of the comedy is visual and easy to under stand. There are, if you speak Chinese a lot of puns and plays on words that will have you rolling on the floor. For example: the son-in-laws Name Dr. Fan. If you say the name Family name-given name as is common in China then it is a boy's name. If you say his given name and the family name second it is the term for a "rapist" which partially explains the father-in-laws mistrust.
Available on Netflix by searching the tile.
If you have moral objections to Netflixs then this would be a good film to use the 1 month free access so that you pay nothing and lower the companies profit margin. The Korean version is available on Youtube.
There is no explicit sex, extreme profanity or gore in the movie probably a PG-13 in the US
Meet the In-Laws (Chinese version) Starring Xu Zheng, Benz Hui, and the lovely Peng Lin
I just watched “Ghost Mother” from Thailand.
Independent horror/supernatural movie.
It was good. Much better than most US independent horror movies.
I shall have to check out the movie you are mentioning.
I did one of these every week until my computer with the list of movies crashed about 18-months ago. I lost my ping list and with the election and stuff I just stopped doing them.
Maybe I should restart them. They were generally fun.
I remember them. :)
Start it up again and include me if you do.
This sounds very good. Thanks for posting. I remember the old movie “The In-Laws” I think it was called with Alan Arkin and who? Peter Falk? I can’t remember. Two guys, their kids are getting married, one is a dentist and the other a CIA agent. Hilarity ensues, also danger, etc.
Meet the Fokkers was pretty good too. The scene with the Urn was quite funny. It’s been done before, probably since the caves, but you know...funny happens!
If you’d like to be on this weekly (More or less) Ping list then let me know.
The general rules: Asian = Hong Kong, PRC, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Bollywood movies. Maybe Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines but not Hollywood movies made in Asia.
If possible I try to link to movies that are available for free or that have safe websites (Netflix etc)and for the purpose of this ping don’t pass judgement on other material on those sites. I will not link to shady sites that are likely to have virus/Trojan-horse problems.
I try to not have more than 1 of 3 weeks to be a Kung-Fu movie.
I don’t link to porn or near porn films.
I am open to suggestions for additional titles.
We aren’t multi-cultural but do enjoy other cultures!
please add me to the ping list
