FULL TITLE: United Airlines flight bound for Italy is canceled after fuel gushes from the plane's wing as it taxied to the runway at Newark airport
A United Airlines flight bound for Italy was canceled after fuel gushed from one of its wings.
The plane was taxiing to the runway at Newark Liberty International Airport when the fuel spill occurred.
Witnesses said the fuel came from the edge of the plane's left wing. It's still unclear what caused the leak, where it originated or how much fuel was spilled.

Leaking fuel is that a problem?
Was John McClane a passenger?

Single point fueling. No caps. Just check valve vents. Occasionally one sticks open a little bit and fuel splashes out on turns when taxiing. Not a big deal.

Maybe OK on a SR-71, but fuel leaking on a passenger plane is not a Good Thing.

Full fuel load going to Italy. Cold fuel on a hot tarmac. Vents have to open for expansion. I have seen 300 pounds leak out the vents from a parked plane. It has to or the rivets will pop like popcorn.

Then don’ t put so much fuel in in the first place. Are there no engineers to figgure this out?

Why fly when you can drive?
If you absolutely have to get there on time, drive.

Almost surely not a full fuel load from Newark to Venice.

I dunno. Cruise plus alternate plus reserve and 45 minutes. Not sure of gross weight either? The pilot probably just unloaded a thousand pounds or so? Just not an uncommon thing and had to be brought up by a passenger. The pilots can’t see the wings. United is jumpy now.
