Bill Cosby trial shocker: Defense rests after just 6 minutes

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — He blamed it on lies. He blamed it on greed. He blamed it on the media.

For two hours on Monday, Bill Cosby’s attorney — flipping between stage-whispered intimacy and ear-splitting verbal explosions — ran through a long list of possible culprits he said are responsible for landing his client at the center of one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent American history.

“This ain’t right!” bellowed Cosby attorney Brian McMonagle in his closing argument. Earlier in the day, he had raced through a startlingly brief, six-minute defense, bringing to a close testimony in the sexual-assault case against the famed comedian.

>>Yep. Cosby will be going into prison about the same time that O.J. Simpson is getting out of prison.<<

I suspect Cos’ appeals will last long enough that the only sentence he will see will be before the Final Judge. He’s only 80 but he is an OLD looking 80. I don’t give him 5 years.

This whole thing saddens and angers me. Cos was a hero of mine in my youth. I can still do every one of his routines from all of his albums and I loved his TV shows. He should have been an example not just for black youth but for all youth.

Defense doesn’t take long when you don’t have one.

And, he may not need one, we’ll see.

Please. He’s not going to jail. There is no way any black jurist will convict him. Especially if it was white women.

One year for Christmas (might have been 1968) I got a little cheap record player...one of the albums that came with it was a collection of Cosby doing sports comedy routines...I laughed so much at that...'if you think I'm gonna run second, after the man said MY NAME, you must be high!'

I think some of his accusers were actual mistresses he had? He was having normal sex with them but supposedly would occasionally drug them without their consent to presumably have sex. Pretty wacked out stuff for sure.

Obviously, they think the prosecution didn’t make its case.

Why is Cosby's Defense team White? Doesn't he trust a "Brother" to do a good job defending him?

I guess "Affirmative Action" has it's limits!

A good criminal defense attorney very often chooses not to put on a case and rely on impeaching the state’s case through cross-examination. This is done to force the jury to hold the state to its high burden of beyond a reasonable doubt. Very often if the defense puts on a case the jury just bases its decision on which side they believed more and the burden gets lost in the shuffle.

Or is it still her word against his?

Well, her word during this trial wasn't very convincing since she had the date wrong as evidenced by her phone records, called him 75 times or so after alleged rape, took a year to go to the police, etc. So maybe his lawyer decided that he said, she said was good enough.

He could be relying on celebrity status, but I suspect he is setting up for appeal on other grounds and figures ‘why bother?’

I’ve seen the pictures of the accusers, and some of them are black.

While I don’t like it, they will argue house arrest based on his age, health (he’s supposedly blind), and celebrity status (he would have to be in special area). He will probably also argue that he is in no danger to society.

Why not? The state needs to prove him guilty, with actual evidence, which they seem to be quite short on.

“The legal concept is “condonation.” Accepting a gift from someone you claim raped you — AFTER the alleged rape — suggests you are friends and the act was a friendly (thus consensual).”

Not to mention the one victim who accepted an invitation to go on a trip to Atlantic City with him and stay in his hotel room, AFTER she claims he already raped her once.

Something don’t taste right, chef.

Exactly. He needs to prove a negative... at least for the court of public opinion if not for a court of law... so how do you have witnesses to something that didn’t happen?

I think you’re right. I remember one accuser being quoted as saying she was shocked and hurt when, after dating Cosby for a while and having consensual sex with him, one day he drugged her. She was like, “Why would he do that? I would have said yes.” It seems Cosby gets his kicks from doing it with helpless, unconscious women, even though he doesn’t “have to.”

I read one article on this and it appears that he was a “cad”, to use the old fashioned term.

The girls had sex with him, hoping to get ahead in Hollywood/show business. He did not follow through on his promises, implied or explicit. They got mad and made the rape accusation(s) to get even.

Still it would seem at the moment of penetration, they were willing participants. Especially the ones making the accusation who were supposedly raped at the playboy mansion and came back for more. In some cases it was simply oral.

What was funny is what was left unsaid in the article, which is why I remember it. In our modern world they could not say the girls kept going back because they were trading sex for opportunity, so they left unsaid the motivations of the women in keeping in contact with Crosby for a year or more. These women were at venue that allow good looking young women to hobnob with celebrities. Gee I wonder why that was, do these young women have brilliant insights to offer? Kind of funny, they would not say what was going on.

Of course this is all based on one article, there may be facts I did not read or am unaware of.
