Anyone have trouble with MRIs being too confining? I couldn't get through my first one....but, today, used Klonopin and a lavender washcloth to cover my eyes and breathed in the aroma. Worked great. No panic.

Have upper back pain I needed diagnosed.

What are your tips and tricks?

Mine only had earbuds. The sounds are obnoxious!

Thanks for the tip. We use the TENS unit (electrical stimulation) and gentle massage for upper back pain. Heated basalt rocks placed strategically on the back helps as well.

This may not work with MRI’s. I have trouble with blood draws that take a long time. Last time they gave me an alcohol swab to sniff and it worked well.

Sounds as if you have a severe psychological problem. I recommend seeking professional advice.

There is no radiation with an MRI. A lot of noise though.

“breathed in the aroma” was your first clue.

I’ve never had any problems with MRI’s, but I understand that they have open-MRI machines for people who do have trouble. I’ve never seen one, but I know they exist.

Never had a problem with them. Not a hint of claustrophobia or panic in my genes. I especially like the “rave music” sounds and usually have to be woken up. I’ve had over a dozen. I’ve also done monitored anesthesia for folks who suffered from what the OP describes. If it’s medically necessary, that option’s available in some hospitals. I’m surprised it’s not more widely available, but GPs and radiologists aren’t comfortable using amnestic agents much less a gas anesthetic like nitrous oxide. Ther’s a lot of risk there, I can’t blame them.

Try an EMG with nerve conductivity testing. That’s “unpleasant”.

I keep my eyes covered and work on naming cities (or bodies of water) across the world, aphabetically.

The concentration works for me.

Just close your eyes go to your happy place.

One Vicodin and an Ativan was barely enough this morning. 2 or 3 blown out disks with nerve contact F-ing hurts. Jackhammering magnetic waves colliding around my lower spine only added to the bone gnashing spasms.

But thanks for asking this, now. Sometimes it really does feel like your back hurting is the biggest pain in the ass of everyone around you.

Diazapam. Valium generic. I have Valium for a test I have tomorrow.

Dr. prescribed a bit extra, so I took some of it for a different test a week ago. :) THANK GOD.

I am going to get loaded tomorrow - even though it isn’t supposed to be a painful test - it just REALLY freaks me out.

Just thinking about an MRI gets the adrenaline going. And it isn’t just the confinement its the noise and having to be completely still. I can deal with claustrophobia if I can move around a bit. Next time I am going for the drugs.

Believe it or not, I love MRI’s. Best 30 minutes of sleep ever.

No drugs at all.

Just knocks me out and I Don’t know why either...
