On March 30, a battered Marvel decided to try and get to the bottom of the problem with a retailer summit and promptly stuck its foot in its mouth.
What we heard was that people didnt want any more diversity, David Gabriel, the companys senior vice president of sales and marketing, told an interviewer at the summit. They didnt want female characters out there. Thats what we heard, whether we believe that or not ... We saw the sales of any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up against.

Hello?
You DO KNOW that the USA is more than the upper West Side ( of NYC) and LA, don’t you?
DON’T YOU?? You do know it’s a business—RIGHT??
people were turning their nose up against....
That ought to win over folk! :)
I takes hard work to be as stupid as the people at Marvel Comics. I’m sure they are all tuckered out from exertion.
The problem I see with “comics” is that they aren’t comics any longer...
They are now for dull minded adults, who look for the sexy super duper hero...
Whatever happened to Tom & Jerry, Heckle & Jeckle, Nancy and Sluggo, Donald Duck???
Comics WERE for kids.......
I really enjoyed “Luke Cage” on Netflix.
There's only a market for a few superstar superheroes.
Keep expanding the roster and repeating yourself and people lose interest.
With all of that, it would be hard to build reader loyalty anyway, especially if the reader demographic is young males looking for a hero who always gets the girl. That doesn't sound like what the producers are producing....
Video killed the comic book star.
Superman and Batman benefited from TV and movies and special effects and marketing.
Not much you could really do with Nancy and Sluggo on video.
The big problem is that’s not where the interesting stuff is happening. Used to be Marvel and DC innovated the industry. Now Image and IDW innovate. I got back into the hobby a few years ago but I don’t get anything from the Big 2. DC “experimental” subsection Vertigo has gotten me with a couple, that’s about as close as I’ve come to getting anything from them. I read about what’s going on in the trades, and they’re just not drawing me in. You can pick up any random book from Image or IDW and be impressed, it might not be a story you’ll want to follow but you can quickly tell it’s interesting and exploring new territory. Marvel and DC just don’t do that anymore.
You just cant fix stupid.
When the Green Hornet, “came out” I tuned out.
I have not given a nickel to a Marvel product in many years.
True, but most of those sales were to kids 5-10 years old...
Did Nickelodeon and Disney Channel take all that away from the little kids???
I know I'm not looking forward to a modern Moby Dick!
Even in admitting wrong, they get it wrong.
I don’t think anyone gives a rat if Marvel concocts a new superhero who is female or whatever shade of skin or blue.
What people do *not* want is SJW propaganda shoved at them under cover of ‘let’s make a diverse superhero’ or ‘let’s reimagine an existing superhero.’
Too bad for them they’ve hired writers and editors who cannot conceptualize anything other than leftist fantasy = doubleplusgood, everything else = haram.
Marvel’s heroes weren’t broken, so they decided to fix them.
Some fictional properties remain popular and profitable for many decades (hi there Kal-El) because the core concept is long-lived if not timeless. Destroy the core, and you destroy your property.
I believe DC Comics recently learned this lesson and is taking steps to remedy the problem (I’m speculating; I haven’t bought new comics for a decade now but still try to keep up with things).
