A professional hunter was killed when an elephant that had just been shot fell on top of him, according to reports.

South African big-game bagger Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt in Zimbabwe on Friday when his group accidentally walked into the path of a herd of breeding elephants near Hwange National Park and three of the elephant cows charged at them, the Telegraph reports.

Botha fired at the rampaging pack but was caught by surprise when a fourth cow came in from the side and picked him up with her trunk.

So, the point is that it's a challenging endeavor, and the money spent maintains the existence of these animals.

Elephants are endangered and the ivory tusks from the bulls are illegal to both harvest and own and that's why they're the target of poachers.

He shot a female from a breeding pack, what was the purpose of that other than save his sorry ass from being trampled?

This guy gets no sympathy from me and my only message to him is good riddance dude, you lost!

When all you know about animals comes from photographs and documentaries, all you know about animals will be determined by an editor.

Do you have a point? I do: The Disneyfication of elephants on this thread is misguided and wrongheaded.

Sounds like Jurassic Park movie with the hunter vs the rapters.
He is fixating on the elephants in front and misses the one coming at him from his side.

Congratulations, you now have the top spot for writing the, bar-none, most asinine thing I've ever read in all my years on FReeRepublic.

With that remark I’d have to say you know all about foul moods.

Besides which I’m a female....so you missed your mark.

You have to ask?

I posted photographs (possibly from a documentary of some sort) ... so I’m not sure what your point is ... Your other posts seem to be generally congruent with my point of view.

Doesn't mean we can't still celebrate when the elephant occasionally wins. After all, if there were no risk involved, what's the point?

To this fine gent, I say, "Good sport, man!"

I don’t see how it is possible the money they pay to hunt lions is spent in ways that benefit the species.

Truth is, it doesn't. The license fees are exorbitant as are the outfitter fees. True, the animals killed are allegedly given to villagers to eat but it's the outfitters who profit the most...........

I have a good friend who has been on two month long African safari hunts at a cost of approx. $35,000 per trip. Each species he hunted required a permit.

Here is an example of what you might have to pay should you decide to go on such a hunt. Given the costs and average wages of the govt. game wardens, where do you think the majority of the monies go?

Price List South Africa

Oh, well, I guess it was a mistake not to consider the arch hypocrisy of a woman complaining about a guy walking around with a dead leopard around his shoulders.

I guess I should have considered the rugged individualism that naturally occurs in the devotees of fashion.

If it were the wild population of lions would be growing in South Africa, instead it is only the number of captive-bred lions used for canned hunts that has increased.

All of the hunting done in S. Africa is on land owned or leased by the outfitters.............

Remember Cecil the Lion? The controversy over his killing revolved over the fact that he had wandered (or was lured) off the preserve and onto the land owned by the outfitter that ultimately shot him........

I absolutely agree with your point.

What I’m having trouble with is restraining my contempt and antipathy for those who know animals ONLY from pictures and petting zoos!

Congratulations,

Thank you for the acknowledgment! You missed the point, I was celebrating the fact that the guy was killed by an elephant that fell on him that was shot by another hunter in his led party.......YAY!

What's wrong with cheering for the under guy?
