Let's just say it: George RR Martin needs to get on with The Winds of Winter
The Guardian ^ | 05-12-2017 | David Barnett

George RR Martin is, as Neil Gaiman famously once opined, not your bitch.

It is eight years to the day since Gaiman wrote this to a fan on his website who had asked whether it was fair to feel that Martin was “letting him down” by taking so long to publish the later volumes in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. That was in 2009, meaning that that fan had another two long years ahead before he’d get his hands on the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons. If that chap was feeling let down then his disappointment must be through the roof now, six years later, still waiting for the next book, The Winds of Winter.

Still, writing books isn’t digging ditches. The creative spark cannot be harnessed and utilised like electricity, always available at the flick of a switch. George RR Martin is not your bitch.

But.

While Gaiman’s comment still holds, won’t somebody think of the fans? The culture of entitlement, where fans expect writers to be chained to their desks is one thing. On the other hand, six years is a hell of a long wait between series books.

At this rate, he will be dead before it’s finished. Talk about working at a snails pace. Thank goodness for HBO, at least we’ll have a broad overview of what happens.

“Given his current age, weight, and writing pace, the likely resolution of this series is another Robert Jordan.”

Yes - let’s hope GRRM has a back-up

...how anyone can argue that this guy is a SciFi or fantasy genius is beyond me!

I'm guessing he advances themes dear to the Left on a consistent basis - that's the new definition of genius. :)

Diana Gabaldon [the Outlander series] is an example of a VERY professional writer.

She's not going to let the TeeVee series catch her up in her books.

Go Tell The Bees [book 9] is on track, and I think she might have one more in the series after that.

The trouble is that it was just getting really fascinating.

re:” Still, writing books isn’t digging ditches. The creative spark cannot be harnessed and utilised like electricity, always available at the flick of a switch.”

As a writer, I agree with this premise. In books vs. short stories and novellas, you enter the writing tunnel, with a possible light at the end of the tunnel. You DON’T HAVE the vast amount of space for ‘a book’ or ‘one book of many in a series’.

‘Series books’ can be either character-driven, like James Bond, or event-driven as were Kim Harrison’s ‘The Hollows’ books. G.R.R. Martin has married chronological, character, and event driven themes into a long batch of third sub-basement plots, while some characters are ‘above ground’ living out their lives.

I think he has created his own nightmare, but as writers have ‘little darlings’ to kill off, just how many ‘darlings’ has this man got?!?!?

Remember, the writing Muse does NOT work by the clock. Have you ever awakened, at some odd hour, with some idea of ‘that thing’ you are working on, and your acting on ‘it’, solves your problem?

Multiply that by the number of characters, plots, and events that could turn up in, say a paperback book, and you wonder why they call writers ‘eccentric’??

Of course in a post literary world where selling one TV contract will make you more money than all the books he’s not really losing audience for the books. Meanwhile George has always been more of an editor than a writer. He writes sometimes when he has the urge, but for the last 40+ years he’s been paying his bills editing.

Actually SP was just making stuff up for funny. There are a couple of castrated character, both from before the story starts and during. But there are not rampant weeners in the books or on the show. The punchline was that there’s lots of boobs and nobody complains but if there were weeners people would freak out, America doesn’t do weeners well but loves them some boobs.

Gaiman is brilliant. But one must keep in mind that not all great stuff is intended for a wide audience. Gaiman is a really weird guy who takes a really weird view of the world and writes for a really weird audience. Some folks can’t go down that path. One of the classic Gaiman anecdotes is when we was working on his TV show Neverwhere, he was being interviewed on set, at one point the interviewer asks if they can move the interview elsewhere because there’s just too much weird going on with the costumes and the set and he can’t concentrate. Gaiman says “really? This is what it looks like in my brain all the time, let’s go to my office”. You just might not be weird enough, it happens.

Boobs are a secondary sexual characteristic.
The male equivalent is pectoral muscles and abdominal muscles.
If South Park wanted to assert that America doesn’t handle that then they would be comparing equivalent body parts.

Penises compare to vaginas and testicles compare to ovaries.
Women who diplay their ovaries have had a vivisection. That would be Steven King material, not South Park.

This is one of the weirder rabbit hole conversations I have had on Free Republic, but oddly it isn’t one bit more disgusting than the things which happen in the books referenced.

Pecs are NOT the equivalent to boobs. For one thing we’re allowed to show our pecs in public on a regular basis. Heck you can have male shirtlessness in a G movie, check any Flipper movie.

Meanwhile vags aren’t exactly easy to put on screen, they’re kind of inconvenient to film. And don’t draw funny. SP has a long history of funny penis drawing. And part of what they were hitting on is that there is a LOT of sex on GOT, and a LOT of nudity, and a lot of discussions of penises thanks to Tyrion’s fondness for doing gutter humor with affluent language, but no actual weeners on the screen. Because American audiences get weird about them (something SP knows well with their history). At least not until last season, a couple years after SP gave them guff over it.

I was able to read the first 5 books in relatively short order as they were all available when I got interested in the series. After all these years waiting for the next volume I have to admit that many details of the story have gotten lost in the fog of my memory. I have no intention of reading all 5 books over again as a refresher course for #6. Chances are that even if he were to finish the series, I would not read them.

Well, just got the first book of the series from the used bookstore, even though I finished Season 5 just recently. Hoping the books is as good as the series.

Well, one reason he hasn't written the next book is because he spent a good part of last year campaigning for the witch.

Yeah, and the other reason is that he has no idea where this story is going.

While waiting for the next book in the series, buy a book from another author. We need readers too.
