Marijuana does not cure cancer (or the common cold)

When it comes to spreading unfounded rumors, urban legends, and outright lies, the Internet is definitely the “Ignorance Superhighway.”  Obvious fallacies are allowed to breed and spread exponentially with just a click of a mouse.  As such, it’s fertile ground for the pro-marijuana crowd to disseminate their lies to gullible people who can’t seem to run a simple Google search in order to verify a claim.

Recently, I read a ridiculous meme that claimed 1) marijuana cured cancer, and 2) the government was keeping it from us.  Of course, it had several “likes” and affirming comments about the alleged curative powers of a drug that medical science hasn’t been able to find.  However; this is what passes for informed debate now; agreeing with a dubious claim and then disagreeing with all dissenting opinions.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or, NORML, and the rest of the pro-pot stoners and liberals have wanted this for decades.  At first, they claimed they were for “decriminalization” and wailed and moaned about the mythical people who were thrown in prison to rot simply for possessing a seed of pot that was found by over-zealous police officers.  Lawyer and author Ann Coulter researched this claim and, not surprisingly, found that exactly zero people have ever been sent to prison just for possession of marijuana seeds or a single joint. In fact, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BLS) figure for possession of marijuana alone (not just a seed or similar small amount) is around 0.7 percent

I know pot can help with certain kinds of pain, but I doubt all this other stuff....mostly pot just makes you dumb and happy.

Marijuana doesn’t cure anything but inititave, ambition, and lack of appetite.

It is being spread on Facebook, not just that it cures cancer but a long list of things. The claims are so wild it reminds me of a medicine show in an old western show. I see the memes all the time because I have a pot head cousin that posts them daily. The odd thing is how many people believe marijuana is a cure-all and the government doesn’t want us to be able to use it.

Pretty much nothing should be smoked. Smoking is not healthy. Marijuana is an herb and many herbs have “medicinal properties.” Some herbs can help in the prevention of cancer. Purslane, for example. If you smoke or enjoy giving oral sex (risks for oral cancer) you should chew purslane or throw it in your salads. CBD oil doesn’t get you high but does have some medicinal properties as well as satisfying the cannabinoid receptors. This can help against chronic pain.

I agree that most people like weed to get high, to sleep better, to relax. And I really don’t care. I don’t see why, because some find it fun, it should be banned. I use cbd as medicine and I don’t get high at all. I don’t want to get high; I have too much to do. And I would test positive and not be able to get jobs because of it, while I never smoke or drink. A guy who is drunk all weekend would pass the test but not me.

I apologize to anyone out there who thinks this is a stupid question, but I really only have one question where it pertains to marijuana ...

It seems that the majority of the people who are advocating marijuana use and/or legalization are the same ones who raised holy h3ll with smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. The left and some libertarians declared smoking tobacco an anathema in all situations: in private, in public, inside, outside .. everywhere. The smell, the second-hand smoke, the "cancer-causing" aspect of tobacco ... all of that and more.

And yet it would seem to me .. as someone who has never smoked anything at any time .. that there's basically no difference between smoking/burning one plant (marijuana) from another (tobacco). Nothing is different, except maybe the different types of "high" between nicotine and THC. Can someone explain to me why smoking marijuana is becoming a "right" and smoking tobacco is still akin to admitting to pedophilia?

“I want marijuana to be legal. Why ? Because I really like it.”

I'd add, "and it's none of your damned business what I grow in my backyard or smoke in my living room, so get back on your horse and ride the hell out of here."

Utter stupidity. You clearly have no clue what you are talking about.

I have a friend with an advanced version of PC. He has been using it in dietary form and has outlived his 3-year death sentence by two. But he is also under normal procedures for the disease.

Marijuana gives something for something. How much is given/taken varies with each user. I’d say the main thing it takes is TIME.

No, it does not cure cancer. If you are having chemo it may help with nausea.

It will not cure the common cold, it will just make you not care you are sneezing on people and your nose is running like a faucet.

My mom survived breast cancer and cannot take any estrogen as it feeds the cancer. Because my mom has to take estrogen inhibitors, she is looking much older much too soon and it's difficult to watch.

I just found this as well:

Cannabidiol as a novel inhibitor of Id-1 gene expression in aggressive breast cancer cells.

From the article:

In conclusion, CBD represents the first nontoxic exogenous agent that can significantly decrease Id-1 expression in metastatic breast cancer cells leading to the down-regulation of tumor aggressiveness.
If the CBD in marijuana helps my mom, I'm going to do whatever I can to help my mom get what she needs. If anybody tries to stop me they'll see the wrath of a ticked off dude who's already lost two family members.

It’s beneficial for chemo-induced nausea and nausea in general. It’s beneficial for inappetence. It’s beneficial for glaucoma sufferers due to increasing blood flow to the eyes. Beyond that I am not aware of any legitimate claim of health benefit from THC or marijuana.

I wonder the same thing. As more states legalize it and have their shops with MJ,coffee, sweets...are they allowed to smoke the MJ inside? If so how can they keep someone from lighting up a Marlboro? More proof of insanity of the left if you ask me.

I have no issue with it if it works. I just hope people aren’t being led down a path by those with an agenda just to make it more mainstream and acceptable. If I or a loved one could benefit from it I would say the same- I would make sure they got it somehow, some way.

We have only a smidgen of knowledge when it comes to usefulness of any plant to cure or ease illness and disease so it would not surprise me if it does turn out marijuana works for some things other than what is already known. My problem with all this hype now is the people promoting it that I know about are not researchers, doctors, or even patients. Those I know that are promoting it are old pot smokers.

My mother’s family came from the hills of Tennessee and my great grand mother was considered to be a “medicine woman” by many- she delivered babies, doctored people with her own mixtures of medicine. I grew up hearing all the stories and never really thought too much of it. The thing is when I worked on the family genealogy several years back I found that she had 13 children; raised them all to adulthood and she and her husband lived up to their 80s. That was very, very unusual back then and struck me that she truly was beyond a real doctor to accomplish anything close to that in those days. Oh what I would give for some of her recipes, notes, what ever. She had to have been pretty wise to plant uses. Her mother was a Cherokee so I have no doubt much of her knowledge came from her Indian family.

Cannabis has carcinogens? You have a source?

Stoney Girl Gardens out of Portland has FB page. Occasionally they run a story of cannabis effects on cancer side effects as well as it effects on certain cancers.

Aloe Vera can also treat cancer, but the majority of the population does not know that the effective ingredients of the plant start to dissipate immediately when the leaf is cut. So if you use an aloe vera product it needs to be a stabilized form of the aloe.
