After you or your pet, as happened to my beloved dog, have been attacked by a pit, you lose all sympathy for arguments in favor of the breed.

Anything positive pits have done can be accomplished by many other breeds. The vast carnage pits have created would be gone w/ the breed.

When you have no facts or arguments, go to insults. You lose.

Pit bulls should be muzzled when outside. Not sure if they could break a muzzle, though.

I’m not defending pit bulls. I think they should be outlawed. I realize they are responsible for most deaths. You claimed that Labs would not kill. I simply pointed out that Labrador Retrievers have also killed people, and invited you to do an internet search, to see that for yourself. And yes, I do have the nerve to say so. All dogs should be on leash any time they are outside a SECURE enclosed area or house. No dog should EVER be left alone with a small child or infant. Not even a Labrador Retriever.

I’m sorry you went through that. Among the dead and the maimed, there aren’t statistics that adequately capture the emotionaal pain, trauma and loss caused by pitt bulls. Nightmares, heart break, phobias etc. are invisible to those who lobby on behalf of these beasts. One horrific account of a child undergoing massive reparative surgery following a pitt bull attack noted that the large surgical team “held it together” for the long hours of surgery. But after the child was wheeled away in bandages, they team members drew the surgery bay curtain closed and cried. What about their trauma? The police and other first responders? PItt bull advocates don’t have to deal with the “mess” these animals make.

They are so powerful that they can break muzzles. I watched a video of a pitt bull raging in a fenced yard, he wiped the muzzle aside in preparation to attack. Pitts have been reported to break through glass doors, windows and chew through chain link because once on the hunt/attack mode, they don’t stop. That’s why enthusiasts like them????????

It doesn’t surprise me that a dachshund would do that. Small dogs are often aggressive. Dachshunds are stubborn and prone to jealousy. Which is why we NEVER allow ours out of his crate when we have company. He can be, like ANY animal, unpredictable. He was not raised around children, but he gets cranky with any visitor. We have a little Shi Tzu, who is as mild as milk, and sweet as honey, but she also is put in her crate, (which they both love to sleep in, by the way) when we have company. I seriously doubt she would attack anyone, but none the less, in the office she goes, with the dachshund.

I think it should be illegal to have one. Why would anyone take the risk? I worked with a nurse once, who always talked up her “gentle as a baby” pit bull. I saw her a few months later, and she was talking about her wonderful Doberman, who she had trained to “smile” for an Oreo. “What about your pit bull?”, I asked her. “That thing?”, she said. “Oh, I shot it! It tried to attack me!”

Just go on the internet and find the resources for numbers of dogs bites treated by ERs and what dogs do the biting.

Pit Bulls have a very short trigger and are known to go after something or some human who startled the dog or when something else startles them. When they bite and latch on, they do not come off.

They are dangerous and should be treated as such.

Their argument is that pit bulls were bred for blood sports

No, it's not. Reputable breeders breed for health, conformity AND temperament. But to ignorant pit bull haters, there is no such thing as breeding for temperament; all pit bulls are the same: Dangerous. Period. You can't breed it out of them.

Rather than banning the breed, how about we crack down on unscrupulous breeders, their dog fighting customers and others who abuse these animals?

Thanks for your kind words.

I was fortunate that my dog escaped with only a puncture wound in his ear b/c I was able to remove the pit by jamming my thumbs into its eyes. It let go immediately and its stupid, inane, idiot handler was able to regain control. Could have been far worse.

It was put down afterwards, and rightfully.

For over 40 years, I’ve had Dobermanns and my family questioned that choice and always worried about their “viciousness”.

My sister has a pack of Dachshunds who bite everyone, including her.
In the midst of this mayhem, are her two little kids, yet no one worries about them.

Never had any of my Dobes attack me.

Go figure.

I just talked to a biker tonight, who recently lost his Rottweiler to Lyme and he somehow wound up with a Yorkie/Maltese mix.

Big hairy, scary guy, showing me photos of himself cuddling with that little fuzzball, the love in his voice, was palpable.

I teared up a bit.

And that’s the whole truth, right there.

My Dobes adore children....the whole breed tends to dote on them, for some weird reason I could not begin to guess.
[even Seven, who has no good opinion of anyone not us, lets kids pet her. if I’m ever murdered, it will be done by a gang of toddlers, I bet]

*But* I would not let mine alone with small kids, because of the worry they’d get knocked down and hurt by an over-exuberant display of affection.

Why worry over that?

Some of the “killings” reported on that craptastic ‘dogsbite’ site include people who were knocked flat by large dogs, and sustained fatal head injuries when their skulls hit rocks and such.

Anyone who “forgets” that they have something akin to a wolf in their living room is a fool, no matter the size or breed of said semi-wolf.

Stupidest question I ever hear ...”Does your dog bite?”
Well, it has teeth, so the possibility is always there.

I highly recommend Baskerville muzzles.

They are of excellent quality, strong and extremely comfortable for the dog.

There have been police operations where they offer a large reward for tips on active dogfights, where they swoop in and arrest everyone there.

It’s been very effective, where used, because the paranoia that someone might rat your operation out for a quick buck, made some rings shut down.

Needs to be done more often and in more places.

Set the maggots against one another, just like they do the dogs.

I would love to know the % of people who bother to train their dog, even the barest minimum no/stay/sit/heel/come or whatever. It might be single digits. It makes for miserable dogs and miserable people.

I don’t know the actual stats, but I do know that some people with small dogs and so-called “harmless breeds” generally turn them into spoiled brats.

I see YouTubes videos of people *laughing* when their little dog is totally red-zoning and trying to bite, sometimes, successfully.

Imagine letting a 200 pound Kangal pull that crap.

All of my dogs start their training the second they come home.

Of course, I don’t expect as much from an 8 week old pup as an older dog, but I get them to learn as much as they can handle.

Odin and Seven, as 12 week old pups, both learned to sit, down and give paw in less than 20 minutes.
They also know that anything they have is actually “mine” [food, toys, whatever] and they must relinquish it, immediately, no matter what, when I hold out my hand.

I also use hand singles with the voice commands, in case they ever go deaf, in their old age.

*I* am solely responsible for *anything* my dogs do and I take that very seriously.

What a world it would be if everyone felt the same way.
