If you meant the average non-Catholic or even many young Catholics I am 90+% sure they have never heard of the KofC.

Maybe your post will bring some folk out. It is just confusing b/c your post makes it sound like you want elucidation not awareness.

They’re mostly older Italian men who celebrate and love America while keeping some revered Italian traditions alive.

And they keep the neighborhoods safe from those that would ruin it.

This is a very strange-seeming answer, but it’s true. Ask any Knight.

In 19th-century Connecticut, Catholics had a very difficult time getting life insurance. And given the sort of labor Catholics had to do then, caring for a left-behind widow or orphans was a big deal. K-of-C was a means of instituting and keeping legal control over life insurance for faithful Catholics, a “mutual benefit society.”

However, the benefits are far beyond “mutual.” In 2010 (last year available), K of C gave $175 million in charity to non-members, performed 74 million man-hours of service, and donated 400,000 pints of blood.

That’s a LOT of value that a lot of people would use for strictly worldly purposes. So the fraternity stuff well, first it provides a place for fraternization, family events, etc., when other fraternities are off-limits to Catholics, but it also keeps the K of C’s original purpose intact.

It’s part social lodge (think Moose or Shriners), but with a strong devotion to the Catholic faith and Catholic institutions. They are very involved in charitable works through the Church.

I guess the Catholic’s thought they had to have their own secret society, can’t let the Freemasons get all the attention.

I think its a man's organization associated with the Catholic church....they hold fundraisers for certain groups.

my mother told me a story that happened in my old home town...Binghamton NY...many many years ago....some KKK types were burning a cross on a hill overlooking town and the Knights came up and beat the crap out of them.....have no idea if its true but my mother never lied and she would know.

Why are you giving a speech to a Knights of Columbus chapter when you apparently know nothing about the Knights of Columbus. Since you claim the local chapter has been around for 120 years, the chapter must be in the Northeast since 2017-120 = 1897 and the Knights of Columbus were only fifteen years old at the time (even though Father McGivney had been buried in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Waterbury CT for five years. That means you must know that the headquarters of the Knights of Columbus is in New Haven CT across the street from the railroad station.

Excuse me, but I have to attend to my BS detector which went so far to the right it pegged and bent the needle.

Its just a Men’s Catholic community organization like the Kiwani’s or Lions.

Basically a Catholic Paternal organization who’s purpose is to do good works in their community
