Vanity: Knights of Columbus -Who are they? What are the? Comments please!

Posted on 04/21/2017 9:33:56 AM PDT by hillarynot

I'm giving a talk in early June to a group on the topic of the Knights of Columbus, Who are they? What are they? What have they done for our community in the past; what can they do for our community in the future? What are public perceptions of the Knights of Columbus? I'll also cover some very interesting history of the local Council which has been around for nearly 120 years.

I suspect there are members of the Knights of Columbus who don't really know the answers to these questions.

I'm interested in what non-members of the public think, so, I'm basically conducting a survey of what freepers think of "who the Knights of Columbus are" and "what exactly they do"

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I think its a man's organization associated with the Catholic church....they hold fundraisers for certain groups.

my mother told me a story that happened in my old home town...Binghamton NY...many many years ago....some KKK types were burning a cross on a hill overlooking town and the Knights came up and beat the crap out of them.....have no idea if its true but my mother never lied and she would know.

The Knights of Columbus organization is not a secret society.

Why are you giving a speech to a Knights of Columbus chapter when you apparently know nothing about the Knights of Columbus. Since you claim the local chapter has been around for 120 years, the chapter must be in the Northeast since 2017-120 = 1897 and the Knights of Columbus were only fifteen years old at the time (even though Father McGivney had been buried in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Waterbury CT for five years. That means you must know that the headquarters of the Knights of Columbus is in New Haven CT across the street from the railroad station.

Excuse me, but I have to attend to my BS detector which went so far to the right it pegged and bent the needle.

A fraternal order. Wiki has all the info.

I think it’s modeled a bit after the Freemasons and was brought into existence because Catholic men wanted a society that they were allowed to belong to with some altruistic practices therein.

A very old and fine organization...As far as my experience goes, they treat vets way better than the VFW does...

Huge crowds at the local one every Thursday &Friday night...

Its just a Men’s Catholic community organization like the Kiwani’s or Lions.

Basically a Catholic Paternal organization who’s purpose is to do good works in their community

We collect money for local schools that serve handicapped kids, primarily retarded though we are not allowed to say that word anymore. Traffic work is only one method. Hereabouts we collect in front of several high traffic businesses like WalMart and some grocery stores. The stores are moving to eliminate charitable collections so we have to find a better way to do it.

I saw a tv show on EWTN about the K of C. I already knew that they did some service work but I had not known that one of their main purposes in the beginning was to provide sports activities to underserved youth. The show was quite interesting.
