SCOTUS Debate -- What if McConnell & Company *FORCED* the Dems to just do a REAL filibuster?

Hey, I know we are all willing to nuke the Demon Rats if possible.

But what if the Republicans FORCED the Demon Rats to just do A REAL filibuster?!

Make them talk and talk. Every day Mitch could remind people that the Democrats are obstructing a SCOTUS nominee that an overwhelming majority of the American people think should be approved.

Make Schumer stay up all night.

Because we NEED that 9th justice seated to move along with the Judicial process.

Invoking the nuclear option screws the Dems enough, esp. when a future justice is nominated.

If McConnell is talented enough to manage the news cycle, I would say it would be good for the President. But I am not confident McConnell is talented enough.

Set it up so they have to work over the entire month of April. No time to go home!

No, nothing to cause a delay. We cannot allow the SC to stay at 4-4 for a second longer. The 9th circus is the de facto SC. as long as there is a tie.

Not the same thing.

This is about a cloture vote, not reading Dr. Seuss.

what if, when they go home, trump just does a recess appointment...

i am for returning the filibuster to its original status.

the 60 vote filibuster needs to go either way i guess.

That’s how I would like it. Remove the two-track rule that allows the Senate to do other business while the filibuster lies around in the background. That way, Schumer will have to read from Green Eggs and Gefilte Fish while other Dims will be singing Ramones Greatest Hits to stop Gorsuch from being confirmed.

In the meantime, the GOP can spread the news far and wide that this spectacle is happening because Gorsuch does not agree with the Dims all the time.

PING!

Remove the two-track rule, but leave the vote threshold at 60 votes until the 2018 elections. With more GOP seats thus obtained, lift it to 67. Nobody’s perfect, and the filibuster is a minority protection device.

It is not the type of filibuster you are thinking about. In the end my guess is cloture will play out

That has always been my opinion since before this situation.
The Republicans always fold at the threat of a filibuster and never make them actually do the filibuster.

The thing is that Harry Reid was right. There is no justification whatsoever for filibustering judicial nominations at all ever. The founding fathers never intended for it to be a thing. It should never be allowed. The fact that the Dems are even contemplating it shows what contemptible left wing loons they really are.

Now, if they want to say that a filibuster for other things means a real “Mr. Smith goes to Washington” filibuster, then yes I’m all for that. Why should they be allowed to say they are filibustering without going through the effort of actually doing it?

“Remove the two-track rule that allows the Senate to do other business while the filibuster lies around in the background.”

That’s the problem with a “filibuster” today: it just generally wastes time without real consequences, so can be continued indefinitely.

Aside from simply restoring the 50+% majority vote the Founding Fathers established for such things, at least make a filibuster a REAL filibuster, the kind that Alphonse D’Amato spectacularly held in his day. For something like 29 straight hours (no breaks!) he held Congress still, single-handedly, by not only pontificating at length about the long-forgotten subject, but by reading the phone book and by singing ad nauseum.

Bring on the spectacle!

Whaddaymean?

The Democrat’s filibuster is every bit as real as Jesse Jackson’s last hunger strike, what he called a “rolling hunger strike.”

You remember, the one where they had a few hundred activists and SJW college students who committed to a “rolling hunger strike,” where each participant agreed to not eat anything for an hour, then “pass” the hunger strike to the next activist, who similarly agreed to not anything for an hour, and so the hunger strike went for three or four days.

The MSM tried to take it seriously, but I don’t think the reaction of the voting public was very enthusiastic.

Whatever makes the dems suffer the most for this Trump hating, politically driven ass showing, I'm all for it.
Let the butt-hurt begin.

The Democrats have already nuked the filibuster by using it for petty partisan bickering. It was not intended to deny a president simply because you don’t like him and the Supreme Court would simply cease to exist if both parties played stupid games like this.

I was wondering about that - could McTurtle just adjourn the Senate and Trump does a recess appointment? Probably not.
