“Yeah, the short story ended in a way where there was hope. The movie? Oh, hell no.”

Stephen King’s response when they told him what their ending was going to be: “Wow! Why didn’t I think of that!”

Needless to say, he didn’t like it. Me neither. I’d waited for years for them to make a movie of that story, and for my patience...

Monty Python and the Holy Grail........Just like their skits, it never really ends.

I swear I remember seeing a picture of theater marquee with the double-feature “Titanic” and “Hope Floats.” I swear.

What I didn’t like about Titantic was after Rose dies, she goes to spend eternity with a guy she had a one night stand vs. the man she spent 60 years with.

Leonardo DiCaprio dies in it, so it has that going for it.

Actually, King loved the new ending: http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/stephen-king-approves-of-the-mists-new-ending/

I think King has become more of a dour, crotchety, bitter, a-hole as he has gotten older. I think that helped him like the nihilistic and hopeless new ending - because it’s just like his outlook these days.

If the King quote I heard/read was accurate, it certainly came across to me as sarcasm. Your mileage may vary, of course.

They gratuitously killed off some of the good guys.

This was done in the books, too. The younger sister was killed in the same way, by bombs delivered by the supposed good guys to make the Capital's citizens think their leadership had betrayed them.

Oh yeah, Bob Newhart and the Dream! Funny.

Sorry to hear it about Mad Men because I think I am only three seasons in to that. Forget to keep watching.

Spoiler alert!!!

Dexter - you think the final scene is when he takes his boat out and has to dump his beloved sister where all his other victims ended up. The ship is so tossed in a storm, you don’t know if this, too, will be his end. Because you know this is the finale episode. Will they leave it ambiguous? The audience feels his tremendous pain. The storm symbolizes his whole life. Born into violence, trained to use it, look how he ends. Beautiful. Tragic.

But no. There is a new scene, sunny day in northwest America, loggers in earthmovers chopping down and moving tree trunks. Wait. Who is that red haired guy with a thick red beard, in the plaid shirt, moving logs?

Truly a NO THEY DID NOT moment. Ruined the series a bit because it was sooooo bad.

Heh!

I was hoping they’d NEVER give him an Oscar, so that in each new movie he’d make sure he was mauled and molested and murdered in new, enchanting ways. Bigger bears, raped by planetary aliens, torn from limb to limb in westerns, who cares! Popcorn time.
