"then a Saratoga"

A wonderful plane in a lot of ways but ever since it got JFK Jr I avoid ... requires a pilot of your caliber every time ...

Although she has an IPhone 7 and normally takes continuos pictures....she wouldn’t take even one...she said people died and there was no way she would make the suffering of teir families worse...

She was disgusted by the number of bystanders and onlookers snapping selfies....

Thanks for the link. My daughter lives off of Bells Ferry Road in Kennesaw. You saved me the time of finding a link to see if it was close to her house.

Daughter just got in....her view was around 10 seconds total....

She said the plane was totally vertical from the time she saw it till impact. No real engine noise just a loud whistle, no smoke....plane was completely intact until impact, nothing noted unusual in control surfaces....did not twist or spin....straight lawn dart....directly into the house....houses on either side were untouched....

No, a real pussy cat. No more than a 6.

The problem was, Kennedy flew out over the lights of the NYC Class B than Connecticut, then western RI on a clear night. It’s like the best VFR you could ever have. Very little other traffic, see everyone 20 miles away with their strobes, and best of all, an incredible horizon from the carpet of a million house and street lights below you.

But then you make about a 30 degree right to go out to Block Island or the Vineyard, and all of a sudden, all, and I mean all of he lights disappear under your low wing aircraft, and you had better be on the guages, with your scan going for about 5 minutes before it happens or you are SOL.

Then you think a few fishing boat lights are defining a horizon, you get off the gauges, and pretty soon you are in Stall ,Spin, Crash, Burn mode.

It happened to me once. I was outbound from the old Bader Apt on he beach in Atlantic, I was F,D, & H, tracking about 090. All of sudden, all those casino and boardwalk lights were done in the same instant.

I was lucky, got on the gauges, and got it turned due north, and got my ground horizon back.

Seriously, Saratona was a old Aunt Betsie rocking chair.

A Bonanza, another story. Know two docs who rode one in. One was trying to “get home” for his college reunion, got too low on the ILS (after 3 missed approaches) and hit trees about 500 feet short. The other one was simply too much airplane for him. Lost it on a marginal VFR day trying to go south around the JFK TCA (pre Class B) at 500 feet.

Both families both times.

I only got to fly about 1-2 times a month, and when I could rent the PA-32 types, I got out of the Bonanza ASAP.

Glad your daughter was not too close today.

Be well.

Well, if you did some due diligence, you wouldn’t be gullible enough to fall for FAKE NEWS posted by Freepers. While WSB has long been known for their helicopter fleet, pretty much everyone knows that TV stations tend not to own fleets of corporate jets to cover the news. Try THINKING before POSTING.

About 10-12 years ago, another private plane crashed into a house just west of the Kennesaw Airport on Kennesaw-Due West Road.

They say there was only a single pilot on board. Family from destroyed house was at church. 1 fatality, no injured. Really lucky considering.

...

Few people know he safely completed 90% of the flight. My question is whether he could have taken a route closer to land or did he take a shortcut for the last part of the flight?

Family was at a Friday Fish Fry at the local church...thank goodness for lent....the second home which caught fire the family escaped from.....

It appears it was a single pilot in the Citation....I thought that plane was rated for a two pilot minimum.....

Was it a ferry job with a FAA exception?

Had to look it up. While there were single pilot versions, Cessna also succeeded in getting a single pilot exemption for Citiation I and II aircraft. My agency requires two fully qualified pilots so I never looked into a single pilot certification, despite having 2500 hours in single place fighters. The Citation would be a fairly easy aircraft to operate single pilot. Nominally you could operate on autopilot from just after takeoff to just before landing. You do have to manage your throttles. No autothrottles.

He shouldn’t have gone out over the water at night like that. Unless you have flown over open water or some very remote parts of the world on a dark night, it is hard to fathom exactly how dark it is. It isn’t really VFR.

Don’t know, but that flight must transit significant portions of over-water.

My personal feelings are that there are times when VFR is perfectly legal, but you really need to be ok on the gauges.

Anywhere west of Amarillo at night.

Anywhere over extended water at night, especially if you are coming from a well lit, defined horizon area such as a coast line with a lot of lights.

Even daytimes up sun in a very hazy area, like over Long Island in August, westbound between 1800 and 2030, anywhere over 3000 AGL until you get up and over the haze layer, the horizon is basically gone.

The trick was knowing it was coming, and be ready for it. It’s especially a problem for someone, like me who trained in 150s, then 172s, then shifted to Pipers. With a Cessna, the horizon defined by lights would disappear gradually as the nose covered the lights, but with low wing Pipers, it all disappeared at once.

Have a good weekend.

Lived on the approach path for SNA, remember listening to my scanner shortly before going to work one evening. SoCal gets low clouds/fog certain times during the year that blow in and reduce visibility to nothing(near the coast...inland OK). While listening I heard a bonanza pilot make several unsuccessful attempts, after the 3rd(?)/go-around I heard tower try to contact him, but got no response.

My workplace was down the street from the airport, going down one of the industrial drives, in the back of one of the buildings, was the bonanza which apparently corkscrewed into a dumpster. I was one of the first ones there, within a short time there were police/fire units and reporters from local news organizations who wanted my story. I declined(didn't have much info/knowledge anyway)and went to work.

My instructor told me, “You get two shots at the ILS. After than, go somewhere else, ‘cause it’s not going to get better.”

Old rule: There are old pilots (like us), and there are bold pilots. There are no old bold pilots.

PS, the media. Guy lost the engine on a 2-seat Ercoupe on take off out of Clearwater Airpark in the late 50s. Put it between two trees, bled off the energy, unbuckled and walked away.

Ditzy reporter for the old Clearwater Sun arrived on the scene, examined the wreckage. We hanger rats told her all ten people on board died. She printed it!

Be well

Speaking of ditzes, remember sometime back there was an accident involving a student pilot using an IFR hood, which the reporter-ette mistook as the sunscreen on the cockpit window.

I am going through a Citation recurrent this week. Evidently the pilot was a seventy year old, single pilot qualified, reported auto pilot difficulties. It would have to be some kind of hardcover and failure to disconnect. There are a couple disconnect features on the autopilot, but there has been another autopilot disconnect mishaps many years ago.
