People who lose their sense of smell in middle or older age risk dying early, a new study suggests.

Although previous research has shown a link between Alzheimer’s disease and a diminished sense of smell, it is the first time is has been shown to impact the chance of death for everyone.

Scientists from Stockholm University followed 1,774 Swedes aged between 40 and 90 for 10 years. At the beginning of the study they were asked to take a test to identify 13 different odours.

Researchers found that their chance of death was linked to how well they scored on the test. Each wrong answer increased their risk of dying over the study period by eight per cent.

Wow. Did your IQ increase after the acetone incident/out of body experience or was it always high?

Usually it is a Zinc deficiency. 10 mg will fix that.

I’m the opposite a trip threw the laundry isle is living H. To many chems. Even a fabric store can do it, with those cheap chinese dyes. Those body washes my sons use plug up my sinuses fast, I have to hold my breathe to get hugged. I can smell that crap 5 ft away. It’s like you took a bath in the whole bottle then added body spray on top.

I don’t buy those room scenting products or candles.

Lack of that sense is also believed to be a sign of Parkinson’s.

I knew a guy who made an unauthorized flight and crashed an airplane before he was licensed to fly. In order to refloat the plane, he was welding 55 gallon drums together. Because he didn’t properly vent them, one exploded in his face. He was medivaced to the hospital and did survive, but lost his sense of smell. A few years later he crashed another plane and was killed. He was in his late 20’s.

What would those scientists consider an *early* death for a 90 year old?

Amazing though, my F.I. badge did not get me backstage at the Victoria Secret premier or this year’s SI shoot. That stinks.

Ignoring the age question, if there is one sense I could lose and not miss, it would be the sense of smell.

Stupidity. Loss of smell is part of the cognitive decline inherent in dementia.

Apparently the “researchers” are experiencing some of it already.

I walk into the office where there are several people and can quite clearly smell which ones needed to take a shower but did not... I am going to live a long time.

In my family , at least on my father’s side, the women all have super smellers and the men have never smelled much. By the time I smell the gas, everyone else is already unconscious. It has been that way so long as I can remember.
