Full title: JFK called Hitler 'the stuff of legends': Secret diary reveals future president's fascination with Nazi dictator when he visited Germany after WW2

So much for presuming Dems were different in JFK’s era. Reagan saying “[u]nder the tousled boyish haircut is still old Karl Marx” was not a vain observation.

The dems WERE indeed different in the JFK era compared to the extremists that permeate the party now. Is anyone suggesting otherwise?

My dad was in the Navy during World War II. He was not released from active duty until after Japan had surrendered. My dad was not a Kennedy.

Something smells fishy here. 1945? Germany was pretty much in ruins. And did not JFK get his PT boat sunk (due to his normal Kennedy incompetence) in the Pacific somewhere around that time?

Ergo me thinketh not that JFK was in German in ‘45. Could be wrong.

His father was even worse. He was all in favor of appeasing Hitler and did not want to fight with Britain. He finally had to be sent home from his ambassadorship.

“He had in him the stuff of which legends are made.”

What a dumbass.

Around 1974 I was working as a claims rep for social security.

One day a guy applied for retirement and it turned out he had been a PT boat captain in Kennedy’s squadron. He was a pleasant guy and real sharp. I took the opportunity to hear a few war stories.

I asked him about Kennedy. He said that he was well liked by the other captains. He also said getting rammed was just about the worst thing which could happen to a PT boat commander.

Good thing we defeated Hitler, though, cuz otherwise there’d be real chaos in Europe today, and there would be anti-semitism, and stuff, right?

Plus we would wonder if we really had any rights here in America, and we might not have two fully distinct and viable political parties.

Good thing we did all that, huh..?

Stuff of legends? Big deal.

Do they not say the same about murdering outlaws of the old west, etc.

No fan of Kennedy, but what he stated doesn’t look “controversial”. Just thoughtful contemplation on the reality of the man. “Stuff of legends” does NOT have to mean “he was a wonderful guy!”

JFK.’s father, Joseph Kennedy, was removed from his post as US ambassador to Britain by FDR because of Kennedy’s rabid public support for Hitler.

Brings to mind that Kennedy ended up in the south Pacific because he couldn’t keep away from a German woman who was known to be a Nazi agent by J.Edgar - Kennedy had a plush job in DC, but after warnings to stop pursuing the woman went unheeded, he was sent far away to save his reputation and that of his family - eventually of course he became the only PT commander in the war to have his speedy boat rammed out from under him by the Japanese and the hero we all know and love.....

“You can easily understand how that within a few years Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived,” Kennedy wrote. “He had boundless ambition for his country which rendered him a menace to the peace of the world, but he had a mystery about him in the way he lived and in the manner of his death that will live and grow after him. He had in him the stuff of which legends are made.”

I can't say I disagree with JFK's assessment. Even though Hitler is one of the most evil people in history, people have remained fascinated with him long after his death. I don't think Hitler has actually "emerged from the hatred that surrounded him" in the minds of most people, but there are many holocaust deniers who still idolize him. Hitler is definitely "one of the most significant figures who ever lived". He makes up a third of the 20th Century trifecta of most evil tyrants that includes Stalin and Mao.
