Scientists Have Begun Testing Whether MDMA Can Cure Tinnitus

Researchers in New Zealand have started trials to see whether MDMA can treat tinnitus, a condition that causes people to hear irritating sound no one else can hear. The undertaking has taken place over the last two years, and involved a small number of participants who were given a very low dose of MDMA or a placebo and monitored over a four-hour period, reports Stuff.

Many of the participants who took the MDMA reported a partial alleviation of tinnitus after three hours, but there was also a large placebo effect among the participants. The researchers administered doses of 30 mg or 70 mg of the drug over two separate trials, which are both doses lower than needed to induce feelings of euphoria.

"Our goal is to try and find a medication for tinnitus. It can have catastrophic effects," University of Auckland professor Grant Searchfield said. "Whether MDMA is it or whether it's a trial for us to identify what is going on in the brain is still an open question."

50 million people currently suffer from tinnitus in the United States, and there is no definitive cure for most causes of the condition. There are tools and treatments to help patients manage their tinnitus though, by reducing its emotional, cognitive, and attention-related impact.

Currently, the researchers are analyzing brain imaging from the trials in order to determine how they should proceed. It would be necessary for them to secure more funding in order to proceed.

The endeavor is a joint study between the University of Auckland and the University of Otago, and the researchers said they were motivated to begin the study by independent reports from people saying that MDMA helped their tinnitus.

In the past several years, studies have found that taking MDMA or ecstasy directly increases your stress levels, and that MDMA is more dangerous for women than for men. Clinical trials in 2013 showed that there is a potential for MDMA to treat PTSD, and Stanford Scientists called for an in-depth exploration of its effects last year.

Gee. Thanks for your reply. I did Google before I posted my comment. So I guess you didn't understand.

If the title and "text" excerpt aren't sufficient for someone with a modicum of common knowledge to understand, it is the responsibility of the poster to make it so. News like "Springfield Police Investigating Muslim Atrocity," doesn't wash, IMHO. Is it really so difficult to change a headline like this to "Springfield [Wyoming] Police Investigating Muslim Atrocity."

“Remember the high pitched whine CRT TVs used to have? Esp color TVs?
That’s what I hear 24/7/365.”

Yep, me too.
It started off low and not too bad, now it’s loud enough that it distracts me when I go to bed. Hard to get to sleep when you hear that loud whine.

I don’t hear bells. Mine is a constant hissing sound. Some days are better than others.

I tried those supplements which did nothing. One technique I have tried and do on a regular basis now is the Finger Drumming Technique. Do it about 50 times a day. Has made a big difference for me.

Here’s a website that can generate tones. If you enter “3800” into both the left and right ear boxes, that’s what I hear 24/7.

http://onlinetonegenerator.com/binauralbeats.html

Is that about the same for you?

Ah. No earphoned on my computer, just a sound system.

“MDMA” is known in the recreational drug scene as “Ecstasy”

Good grief. Is all science becoming junk these days? Sheeesh...

Hmmmm, I’m using my ‘phone’, not a computer. Wonder why it didn’t work? It’s a pretty cool tone generator. I’ve often wondered what frequency other people hear for their tinitus.

I should add that I’m also a tinnitus sufferer. In years past, it would come and go, but starting about two years ago, it turned on, and has never turned off again. Very high pitched whine that goes on 24/7.

Reading an article like this that promises a cure, only to find out that they’re experimenting with the street drug, Extasy, is very disappointing.

“Remember the high pitched whine CRT TVs used to have?”

I’ll trade you that for the emergency broadcast system tone I’ve had since 1995.

Same with me, heard it for years. We used to live near a major highway and it sounded like the 18 wheeler that never passed the house. It was years later that I found out what it was. Mostly I just ignore it and don’t notice it. I think maybe allergy has something to do with it.

I don’t have Tinnitus; but I do hear the “Taos Hum” in our
fluorescent light over the kitchen sink. Fang can’t hear
subtle sounds, but they drive me up the wall. Not that
I’m complaining; it’s a blessing.

A friend puts something in his hears with Q-tips, don’t go digging in their with a Q-tip, lightly does it. Think it was called “sweet oil”, and you get it at the pharmacy. I started using it, and it helps after a few weeks. But finally the pharmacist told me just to use straight old olive oil on a Q-Tip coz’ the other is just oil with some dilution added. Makes me think perhaps some tinnutis is caused by dry, stopped up ears. Give it a try...doesn’t hurt.

I haven’t tried that but I seem to get some relief by taking 20 mg of lutein a day.
