Snake left behind on flight in Alaska (The snake is okay now)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Anna McConnaughy was flying to Alaska's largest city when the announcement came over the intercom: a passenger on a previous flight had brought a pet snake on board.

The passenger had gotten off the plane. The snake had not.

"The pilot came, and said, 'Guys, we have some loose snake on the plane, but we don't know where it is,'" McConnaughy said Tuesday.

Unlike the movie "Snakes On A Plane," this one wasn't venomous. Mostly, it was sleepy.

A little boy, one of seven passengers on the Ravn Alaska commuter flight Sunday from the Alaska village of Aniak to Anchorage, was climbing on his seat when he spotted the slumbering snake. It was lying partially covered by a duffel bag near the back of the plane.

"He said, 'Oh, Mom, look at this. What's that?'" McConnaughy said. "That's how we figured out there was a snake sleeping in the corner."

There was no panic. McConnaughy said. Mostly people wanted to see the snake.

Much appreciated! I'm perhaps not the right person to run a snake/reptile ping list, not having snakes of my own, but I do live in an area with lots of them (rural Upstate NY, in a meadow in the woods...) as well as many other critters.

But I'm certainly happy to maintain the list as long as someone more knowledgeable (and you have kindly offered, thanks!) can field the questions that inevitably come up in comments. Of course if you wish to assume the ping list duties (now or in the future) I will defer, and just be a member.

I'm in awe of your work at rescuing wild snakes. I was a wildlife rehabilitator for about 15 years, specializing in skunks and raccoons and so forth. I am seriously impressed, and good for you!

Meanwhile I'm on the lookout for a good snake-related news article with a catchy headline, that will make for a good "first thread" to launch the ping list. Failing that I may just create one as a vanity. Figure I'll have time over the weekend to put it together.

Many thanks again!

Yep, that’s the killer beep grin, just before engaging the ‘chainsaw’.

The ‘scary’ teeth are on my yellow anaconda. Those are respectable, thankfully, he’s never bitten, only struck.

My big Boa girls have greedy feeding responses but the only one who makes me nervous is Tig, my 8’ Argentine male.

He was mistreated and starved for most of his 20 years and gets a little over zealous at supper time.

The last time, he dropped his rat on the floor and flung himself after it

While he was hysterically searching for his rat, I tried to get hold of him to put him back in his house and was rewarded with him doubling back on himself, hissing and gaping.

First time I ever had to use the hook, to grab his front end while picking up his middle.

Got him back in and he immediately hopped back out after the rat.

So...I picked up the rat, threw it in first and did it all over again.

Dang snake is like a dog with a bone.

Next time, he can just finish his supper on the floor.

: D
