96 Percent of Movies on Netflix Directed by Men: Swedish Study
The Local ^

Streaming platform Netflix has been criticized in Sweden after a study of its content showed that almost all of the movies hosted there were directed by men.

The Stockholm Feminist Film Festival, an annual festival which aims to improve gender equality within the film industry, carried out an evaluation of the gender equality levels of films and TV shows hosted on the Swedish version of Netflix. It found that 96 percent of all films released on Netflix Sweden in 2016 had a male director.

The film festival also researched the gender balance among scriptwriters, producers and leading characters of films hosted on the platform. It found that 87 percent of the scriptwriters, 74 percent of the producers and 78 percent of the lead characters were men.

"Netflix is the world's biggest platform for films and TV shows. That the offering is so enormously unbalanced is a serious thing. If Netflix wants to contribute to gender equality, it's high time they take in films by women," Stockholm Feminist Film Festival head Stephanie Thögersen said in a statement.

The festival's study found that only 1.5 percent of the films on the platform had both a female lead character and female director. Of all the TV shows released on Netflix Sweden in 2016 meanwhile, 85 percent had a male director.

The research showed that the lack of gender balance was not unique to Netflix however. The festival also looked at all of the films released in Swedish cinemas during the 11 month period between January and December 2016, and found that only 10 percent were directed by a woman, while 26 percent had a female script writer and 31 percent a female producer.

Set to take place in the Swedish capital in March, the Stockholm Feminist Film Festival will showcase movies like Amanda Kernell's Sami Blood, winner of Best Nordic Film at the 2017 Gothenburg Film Festival, which The Local previously wrote about here.

Sweden needs to get her priorities straight. They have much bigger problems than this right now.

Yeah. So. People don’t like chick flicks.

Heck. I can’t think of a single female director.

Someone has a lot of time on their hands. I’m lucky if I find one new movie I like every once in a great while.
It’d be nice if they stopped focusing on male/female, black/white or normal/homosexual. How about a well directed, well acted movie with a good story?

Lena Wertmuller. I recall seeing photos of Lena and Mick Jagger (Yes, that Mick Jagger) showing both wearing swimsuits and enjoying a dive off a very high rocky cliff, maybe in Greece. Lena was about 85 year old then. She ‘finally’ died at 88. I don’t know what the tie was between Mick and Lena, except that sometimes very famous and the very infamous tend to socialize together. In an opposite view, Paul McCartney became a close friend of Doris Day back in the 60’s.

Heck. I can’t think of a single female director.

Amy Heckerling directed Clueless.

Susan Seidelman directed Desperately Seeking Susan.

Those were pretty good.

I demand that the pool of movie directors reflect exactly the society they come from!! This is an outrage!!

You are confusing two directors. Lina Wertmüller is 88, still alive, Italian, and had nothing to do with Hitler. Leni Riefenstahl died at 101 in 2003, was German, and made films for Hitler, but never dated him. Riefenstahl took pictures of Mick Jagger.

Is Sweden where all the new gay content on Netflix came from? I cancelled my account awhile back fter I kept seeing more movies with gay themes when it was totally unnecessary and placed there for young malleable minds. It seems that the LGBT crowd, including their film makers, are always in recruit / seduce mode for young children and teenagers; esp the teens. It’s as if they want to spread the sickness in large numbers to make it appear to be “normal”. It’s disgusting.

Untrue

Hitler was sexually ambivalent as a three dollar bill

He turned Leni down

And she was decent looking

Homos today work overtime to purge the pinkness from Nazi hierarchy but it’s there

OMG. You are correct! Funny how we think we know things that are totally inaccurate. Sorry about that.
I recall thinking too bad, about Lina ,because I really liked her movie Swept Away with Ginacarlo Giannini. Better than Madonna’s remake.
Yes, indeed. Two very different women. No doubt, Ms Wertmuller would be livid being mixed up with a dead Nazi sympathizer who by the way was at least twenty years older than she is.

I still cannot even picture THAT happening. Sly was always stoned back then. Did they ‘bong’ together? What a picture.
However, Doris was just an actress, not a saint. I recall tales of Cary Grant doing LSD back then. An image greatly at odds with his upper class, bon vivant nonchalant onstage character.
