The Cheat Sheet ^ | January 20, 2017 | Robert Yaniz Jr

In the past decade or so, science fiction on television has seen a dramatic uptick in both quantity and quality. Shows like Westworld are keeping critics engaged and audiences coming back for more week after week, but while a number of sci-fi shows over the years have developed significant cult followings, others have become notorious examples of just how bad the genre can be when it isn’t executed effectively. Here’s our look at some of the worst sci-fi shows to ever hit the small-screen. For the record, we’re focusing specifically on live-action series only. So any infamous animated shows won’t be appearing below.

You beat me there. I love sci-fi and hate to see it done badly. Better to watch something else done well.

I was never aware of the TV series; however, Jenny Agutter remains even more memorable after seeing the TV photos.

I remember watching it, but I remember nothing of it. In those days it was hard to get good science fiction. I have a friend who said at the time, "We were so desperate for science fiction that we were willing to accept really bad science fiction."

I just remember Richard Pryor’s take on “Logan’s Run”.

“They made a movie about the future called ‘Logan’s Run’, and there ain’t no n_____s in it, I said, ‘White folks ain’t plannin’ for us to be here.’”

I don’t think that dress was in the TV show.

I don't know. I don't remember much from the TV show. That image came from the Wikipedia entry on the TV show.

Thanks, I knew it was one of them.

The hottest girl on Star Trek was Sherry Jackson. The show actually had a good number of lookers as guest stars.

Hahaha...I had a great childhood, but that is a crazy age to be a boy. I’m glad I went through it, but not sure I would like a second pass at that!

There are way too many simple things at that stage in your life you just don’t understand!

It’s About Time”
Man I remember that show, I watched it as a kid.

Then you had “Captain Nice” anyone remember that one:

Plenty of crazy fantasy/scifi out here.

Land of the giants. I saw it on METV the other night.
The one where they found the giant 38 special.
Man, was that ever stupid.

I'd agree. It was one of the first series where the aliens actually looked alien.

They certainly did a better job than most other shows of the time. Yes, the fact that aliens are invariably human looking has long been a major flaw in a lot of science fiction stories. The show attempted to not only make different looking aliens, but also it tried to represent viewpoints that were inherently alien. It also gave the various alien groups distinctive cultures.

Plus, the show may have been one of the first sci-fi shows designed from the start with a story-arc for the whole series.

That was one of the things I most liked about it. Finally we have a show where the episodes are connected in an arc, rather than being a sequence of independent events which generally had nothing to do with each other.

You had to watch it for a long time to begin to appreciate how complex the story was.

There was a Flash Gordon series in the 70s, too. It was mildly dumb.

NextGen was hard fro me to watch in college for those reasons. The show felt like an extension of a politically correct campus on Halloween.

My favorite moment in the show was when Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) was launching into one of her PC rants on Q (John Delancey) and, in mid rant, he turns her into a barking, yapping, howling Irish Setter. I roared with laughter. Q snaps his fingers and she’s still ranting and wagging her finger at him. It was the best Trek moment and no one ever brings it up.

The odd thing about Q is that he’s basically Star Trek’s version of The Great Gazoo. Once you have that parallel stuck in your head, it’s hard not to remember it when watching Q deal with Picard and his crew.
