The right thing to do was to leave it there in the water and motor on to the next fishing spot. Even the cops can’t always be trusted. Some fish have to be thrown back.

This was not a "mistake".

It was a cold blooded decision to go into the drug business.

I cry no sad tears.

I didn’t read the whole article, but from the excerpt, I didn’t see where he made a “mistake.” He made a conscious decision to break the law and tried to profit from it. ridiculous reporting like this is as much fake news as CNN.

He should have left it in the water and radioed the Coast Guard but stayed near enough to see the package but not touch it or put a line on it.

Alternately he could have contacted the DNC and told told them where their party pack was

A similar thing happened to me years ago. We were in Florida fishing for grouper, when we saw a floating object. We hauled it on board and saw what it was. We absolutely panicked. Our first thought was that the guys who lost it would come back and kill us. We busted it up and threw it over, so it would sink. We then realized we had coke all over the deck, and thought we’d get busted by the Feds who were chasing the guys who dumped the coke. We sped back to dock and washed the boat. Crazy day. We had grouper at a fish camp.

If his story of just “finding” the package is true, I think he was lucky, although the saga is not yet over.

The people who intended to pick it up probably consider what he did to be theft, and they frequently resolve this kind of issue with no court involvement.

OTOH, “finding” the package might not be as accidental as he claimed.

When I was living in florida we saw square grouper weekly, you are right, let it rot and leave quickly, may be a pick up point with cartel thugs on the way...

I was on a scallop trawler running about 200 miles off ny, trawling toward massachusetts, a columbian trawler came close to us, and asked for bait...it definitely was a drug boat looking for its drop in international waters, the water was rough and having 2 150 foot trawlers near each other was dangerous, we moved away and hands went inside, manned the rifles..fortunatelyvthey left,,, we reported it, but in international waters it jeant nothing..

Details.

My point, which you seem to agree with, are that some games are best not played.

Yeah sure. The Colombian Cartel guys don’t mind at all if you turn over their product to the Coast Guard and DEA.

In fact, the cartel guys live it if you do that!

While I was walkin' down the beach one bright and sunny day,
I saw a great big wooden box a-floatin' in the bay.
I pulled it in and opened it up and much to my surprise,
Oh, I discovered a (Boom-ba-boom), right before my eyes…
