Predictable as ever, Doctor, says the Master in the Doctor Who episode The Deadly Assassin. In a similar vein, the Guardian has followed the announcement that Peter Capaldi is leaving the series with not one but two articles about how the new Doctor must be a woman, black or preferably both. Because white males are boring! After all, its 2017. As the Hitler Youth said to the 19th-century humanists: We dont think like that anymore.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with having more women and black people cast in mainstream roles. The more the merrier. But when cultural representation of diversity becomes an end in itself, then it becomes meaningless, a box-ticking exercise that distracts from exploring what stories we want to tell and why.
Moreover, when on-screen diversity is seen as the pathway to a more just society were in trouble. Not only does this entail a re-essentialising of people along biological lines something that emancipatory movements, from female to black to gay liberation, fought long and hard to get away from but it is also, at root, unradical. Diversity of representation is embraced by cultural elites as a gesture that suggests change, but which in fact does nothing but reinvent the ideological status quo to be more palatable. In the end, it is simply the cultural version of capitalist logic: equality will trickle down to the disadvantaged by their representation in culture.

And homosexual. Let’s not forget homosexual.
And left-handed.
And an amputee.
And a red head.
And blind and a deaf mute.
And moslem. Naturally.
What, did they run out of preening faggots?
“But when cultural representation of diversity becomes an end in itself, then it becomes meaningless, a box-ticking exercise that distracts from exploring what stories we want to tell and why.”
It’s worse than meaningless, it’s blatant racism and sexism. If they were to consider many actors for the role and find a black woman was just the absolute best choice, that would be one thing. However, to demand a black woman get the part because of those attributes alone is to judge people only by those attributes, and to judge people only by the attributes of race and sex is the definition of racist and sexist.
A transgender midget eskimo quadruple amputee seems like the obvious choice.
Dead-on.
Touché. Dr. Who would actually be a fitting name for Obama since he’s the man with no past. All his records are hidden from the public—sort of ironic for someone who claims to be a public servant.
Bad enough they ruined Top Gear. Then just about all Jeremy Clarkson does is rant against America every chance he gets made me stop watching them on Amazon.
Any of those groups is typically acceptable in liberalville, but they must be a supervisor or controller of white people or the dominating person in a personal relationship scenario. BBC, Amazon and Netflix projects are full of it, and even better in their mindsets if they are homosexual and-can obsessively remind people about the "dangers" of climate change.
If true, I hope they don’t make a typo in promoting the new doctor and have it come out as “ Dr. Ho”.
If it doesnt work they just call the fans racist and sexist.
Pardon my Brooklynese, but you just know she’ll come to be called:
Dr. Who-a
I went to a Dr. Hu yesterday. He was Chinese man, a rheumatologist. People come in all colors, shapes and sizes. And to the ones who have actually accomplished something, none of that matters. Accomplishment matters.
Why don’t they make him a robot AI, I always believed he isn’t a biologic
Clarkson can’t get enough of US muscle cars, though.
