The biggest barrier to Windows 10 success is still Windows 7

The fate of Windows 10 lies in the hands of users that are still deeply in love with Windows 7.

This year's CES saw plenty of shiny new Windows 10 devices on display, from the acrobat Lenovo Yoga through to HP's all-in-one Sprout Pro.

Hardware like this will certainly boost the fortunes of Windows 10. Sleek new designs and form factors, and the rise of two-in-one devices like the Surface Pro that can function both as a PC and a tablet, are giving consumers and businesses a reason to invest in Microsoft's latest operating system.

And Windows 10 has made some decent inroads thus far: it now accounts for somewhere around a quarter of PCs accessing the internet as measured by NetMarketShare...

First, Windows XP usage hasn't changed very much at all as a result of the arrival of Windows 10. That's hardly surprising: Windows XP wasn't part of the free consumer upgrade programme that Microsoft offered. Windows XP is long, long past its sell-by date, and most of the hardware running XP is probably so old that is can't be upgraded anyway. If users are happy running such an antique and insecure operating system they'll probably keep using it until the hardware gives up or the Sun expands to finally vapourise the Earth, whichever is sooner.

Second, Microsoft did a good job encouraging people to move away from Windows 8...

But what about Windows 7? This is the big one, of course. Usage has decline according to the NetMarketShare data - from 61 percent to 48 percent over 18 months, which looks at first glance like a rapid decline.

But the big question for Microsoft is whether that erosion of Windows 7 usage will continue...

Oops... did I inadvertently give the impression I'd stop using Win7 (at home) when the security updates stop? I'll just continue being careful. Besides, I have Mac and Linux and other OSes that do my primary work -- the Windows boxes are for programs that only run on Windows.

At work, my company makes software that has to remain compatible (and thus gets tested and validated on) operating systems that go all the way back to 2005-era Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD... We still test on WinXP. We'll still be testing on Win7 when the Sun goes supernova.

I did not want to upgrade FRom Win 7 to Win 10 until I had the opportunity to see Win 10 in action.

I liked it, and upgraded with no problems at all.

I am not a computer geek - I am a fairly knowledgeable amateur user, and FRom where I sit and for what I use my computer for, Win 10 does the job and is OK.

What is all the fuss about? FRom my vantage point, Win 10 is OK!

I feel the same way.

I love Windows 7 and I will not give it up for Windows 10.

“Some people do really have to do work on their pc, and you sure can’t do that with win 10.”

MS updates must come before your work. That’s the new pecking order.

That's great, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If it works for you, more power to ya!

The existence of those of us, who find that Win10 does not do the job as well as 7, does not negate your successful experience. Enjoy!

I sure wish I had my Win 7 back. This Win 10 is a big let down.

Been on Windows 10 since it first came out, and haven’t had even the tiniest of problems.

And, it’s now even better than Windows 7 against viruses and other exploits.

I had Windows 7, and loved it. Now it’s Windows 10, and its a much better product than Windows 7, which was also a very great product.

The same whining that occurred with the Windows 7 upgrade from Win XP, is happening all over again. Eventually, ALL of Windows 7 machines will have moved on to Windows 10 or whatever follows it.

The Win 10 UI? Heck, the world moves on from the old ways, but even so, I hardly ever use the Win 10 UI, and my UI looks almost exactly like Windows 7.

Problem with Windows 10, is the people that don’t know what the heck they’re doing, or just don’t like change, or just like to whine for no real reason, or just don’t like Microsoft. I don’t like Microsoft, but I do like Windows 10, and I don’t miss Windows 7 at all.

Win7 pro is supposed to be supported until 2020.

Security upgrades will not be supported, and I believe will end by 2018. Right now, Windows 10 has better security than Windows 7, and Win 7 will not be getting the same security as currently exists in 10.

I daresay that's the key to your happiness. :-)

On my Win10 machines, I installed Classic Shell, and (just like I did on Win7) brain-damaged the UI features back to where people think I'm running Win2K.

It's fast, it's efficient, it works fine for me -- on Win7 better than Win10, but both are usable.

But I work in IT and have to deal with many "stock" Windows 10 systems, and I lose my mind trying to make them do things via the stock UI. Therein lies my complaint with it. Given my druthers, all our Win10 users would be on Classic Shell and life would be good. But alas, I can't mandate that on the engineering and test machines.

Consider yourself fortunate.

It is, of course, entirely possible that I speak FRom a position of computer semi-illiteracy, but so far, so good!

I may not know enough to be aFRaid of or distrust Win 10.

The good news is, if it gets really bad, and I lose my Win 10 composure, I own an original Win 7 install package. I hope I don’t have to use it, but if I need it, I have it.

IT personnel who need to stay ahead of the curve

The only reason I use WIN 10 is precisely because my work has a 24-7 global team dedicated to supporting the POS. < |:)~

I have a desktop and laptop with Windows 7 and a tablet with Windows 10. Guess what. The tablet sucks and gets little use, mainly as a solitaire machine.

When my Windows 7 home built desktop becomes inoperable I will get a Mac. My wife switched to Mac for her business and after a small learning curve for her it has been care free. Yes it did cost more, but a rock solid OS for a business is worth it and it will last many years.

[[I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 purposely before they disappeared.
I do not want Windows 10.]]

Yuo can still download an .iso of windows 7 (although it is bit involved- you gotta paste some java code into their site via the console in order to get the menu to show the other windows versions)- as long as you have a valid windows key you can install it on any new computer you buy- you will just have to download drivers specific to your hardware if need be afterwards-

[[What is all the fuss about? FRom my vantage point, Win 10 is OK!]]

Basically the fuss is the intrusive phone home crap on windows 10 that you can’t turn off- and the forced updates- soem updates break systems- and when a bad update comes out- people like the option of being informed about it and not downloading it to install it- with windows 10 you have no choice- and the lack of menu choice- many folks like the old windows 7 menu with folder view- it’s simple clean and works well- they don;t like the new tiles, and don’t like the hybrid look and feel to the new ‘classic’ look- also some hardware and some programs ceased to work with windows 10

There are several other reasons as well-
