Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for a massive memorial of a medieval warrior king that is expected to cost billions of rupees and has sparked criticism from environmental activists and others.

The memorial includes a proposed 192-metre-tall statue of Shivaji, a 16th-century ruler from western India. Once complete, the statue will be more than twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.

The memorial will be built 3.5 kilometres off Mumbai's southern coast, on land reclaimed from the Arabian Sea.

This is the sort of things politicians do when left to their own devices.

Good thing India has licked poverty and squalor and has extra money for artistic pursuits.

Think about who Modi is. He would pick this guy, never Gandhi.

No nation that has ever existed has solved every bit of poverty and squalor. We haven't, and we're the richest nation that has ever existed. And yet, nations build monuments - they inspire people and inspire unity.

Well put.

This is beside the point but I must write it:
The ONLY country more filthy that India is China. I went through the list of third world sewers and both my husband and I agreed on the degrees of filth.

China wins, hands down.

India is one of the most poverty-stricken hellholes in the world. Many, if not most, of the population gets water by drinking it straight from the sewers (for example).

The most poor, “deprived” American would have a middle-class plus lifestyle in any other country in the world and one the upper class in India.

MOst of the world will see the irony, though.

Wait a few years when the next generation gets their panties in a wad and demand it be taken down.

I hope it will have more than adequate defenses, because Muslims will definitely want to destroy it.

I like it, we use to build big things before we became a big welfare state.

They need to loose the wind farm it's an eye sore.

I saw an article this week that said that India now has a bigger economy than the UK. I think they can afford it.

That's easy to take care of. Just stick some solar panels on it and they'll praise it.

Stupid environmentalists, virtue signaling with their stupid windmills. The noise of the wind turbines would be unbearable the way they have them right next to the memorial, and the seagull kill would be huge.

Have you actually been to India? It really is its own (sub) continent with everything from snowy mountains to jungle, desert to vast green agricultural fields, cardboard box housing along a Mumbai railway to incredibly luxurious hotels and estates. It’s a frustratingly illogical and chaotic place, but you don’t see people starving and most of the population is employed doing something. The worst poverty I’ve ever seen was in this hemisphere, in Haiti.
