Empire State Building Light Show Will Sync to Mariah Carey Every Night Until Christmas

The Empire State Building will project a nightly holiday light show onto its iconic spires from now through Dec. 25, synced to the tune of the only Christmas song anyone can ever agree on, building officials announced this week.

Every night at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" will begin to play on three major radio stations — Z100, 103.5 KTU and 106.7 Lite fm — in concert with green-and-red flashing lights projected onto the third-tallest building in NYC.

Can't be bothered to get in position by 7 p.m.? Don't blame you. Here's a video of what the Mariah Carey-Empire State-iHeartRadio mashup will look and sound like each night, from its debut on Dec. 19:

As you can see in the first few seconds of the above clip — and again at various stages throughout — Carey herself made an appearance in the Empire State Building's 5th Avenue lobby Tuesday night to "flip the switch" on the show. It all looked very festive and cracked-out and bursting with holiday cheer and cleavage and corporate interests, in the stolid tradition of so many Midtown Christmases past.

Thanks. Will look for it when I'm in the city later today.

Have to say, this is a far cry from their light display several years ago, marking the anniversary of Mao tse Tung's communist revolution.

Mao Takes Manhattan: Empire State Building Goes Red and Yellow for China
September 30, 2009

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China under Communist rule and Mao's 1949 revolution, the Chinese will hold a military parade in Beijing on Thursday of unparalleled size -- 5,000 soldiers, 43,000 fireworks and a display of 52 new weapons -- followed by a civilian parade of 100,000 marchers and 60 floats, many chanting new nationalistic mantras coined by the Chinese government for the occasion.

For a nation that worships Mao, and the path of development and prosperity the Chinese people believe he charted, nothing less would do to commemorate its 60th anniversary.

But when it comes to the commemoration of China's 60th anniversary in the U.S., perhaps we could -- and should -- expect a little less.

Wednesday night in New York City, the Empire State Building will illumine its familiar spire with red and yellow lights in honor of Communist China. The Communism-themed color scheme will stay lit through Thursday night, much to the delight of China's consular officials, who were on hand for a ceremony in the lobby of the iconic building Wednesday morning, and to the acute dismay of the dozen or so protesters outside, and to many Americans who question whether honoring China's Communist revolution here is at all appropriate.

NEW YORK — New York is seeing red over the decision to turn the city's highest beacon — and one of America's symbols for free enterprise — into a shining monument honoring China's communist revolution Wednesday night.

Why o why isn’t there a song called “ All I want for Christmas is that Mariah Carey cover her bloated distorted body and go away”

Is that too much to ask?

What a waste of light. I suppose they’ve lit it up with rainbow colors to honor the LGBt crowd.

If we did that to prisoners at Gitmo the U.N. would be demanding we cease and desist.

Perhaps she will sing at the inauguration?

No, she does not want to end her career.

That woman doesn’t sing - she screeches. Somebody must be standing behind her with a sharp stick poking her.
