I remember that day (Glenn orbiting earth.) I was home from school on a rare sick day. He must have been in his 40s...I’ll have to go check now.

Went back to space as a sitting senator. Another first and only.

Nope. Jake Garn on STS-51D. April 1985.

Glenn shut down the investigation of that treason.

As an accessory to treason, he himself committed treason.

It is past time for people to realize that protecting (and aiding) traitors makes you a ........traitor.

You’re right, I apologize for sounding like I was already writing TOD.

Wow, thank you. I was just commenting to someone, the fastest way to find out you’re wrong is to post a comment and watch for the feedback.

I never knew about Garn. I’m sure I must have known at the time, but it went straight down the memory hole.

No worries ... the thread is a bit ambiguous. I think he’s not long for this world. May God bring him peace and mercy.

exactly - I thought the same thing - I held the astronauts up as hero's when I was a kid - between the Keating 5 and the shuttle, I lost whatever respect I had for him

I've got nothing

He leaves behind an ambiguous legacy, even after his military and NASA service.

That's the best line I've seen yet. He was a national hero as a combat vet and Mercury astronaut. That's my preferred legacy for him.

That he was corrupted by his time inside the Beltway is hardly surprising. I'm hoping that President Trump is able to drain that swamp.

No, I don’t agree with him at all. But I DO follow some old rules that you don’t. Attacking someone when they are too weak to fight back, that’s the mark of a coward.

There’s lots of other times for that crap you wanna discuss.

No matter what some say, physical bravery does not excuse horrible politics or beliefs.

We would all have been better to remember that.

Nice double entendre there, “grave condition.” Is that like “shovel ready”?

First man to orbit the earth. Not everyone gets to say that.

First American to orbit the Earth. Yuri Gargarin was the first man to orbit the Earth.

If John Glenn didn't want to be remembered for supporting abortion, gun control, and socialism then he shouldn't have used his time in the Senate to support abortion, gun control, and socialism. I bet they're praising him for these things over at the DUmp.

If you wish to bring up his wartime record, please do so. You'll recall that I referred to COLONEL Glenn as a patriot and a great American.

I was in my early 20's when I walked thru Hobby Airport in Houston with him in 1962...when he was one of the most recognizable people in the world. He and his family were returning from an around the world tour after his flight.

Watching people's reaction to seeing him was when I realized that I never wanted to be famous

He had a problem handling the fame that went with his job.

I agree with you. Apparently others in this thread think that we should only recall the good someone did in their life, when that person is near to death. By that logic, when Bill Clinton is on his deathbed, we should refrain from examining his crimes against the US citizens and try to flush out any tiny good that he maybe did? Poppycock!

GMTA...I used the exact same wording the other day about Arnold.

Sigh. I admit that I lost all respect for Glenn back in the 1980’s, but...that part of me who was a kid when he went up still has him inside that display box with the silver suit for my GI Joe.

He may not be a perfect man, but for his Astronautics, he will always be a hero to me.
