The Man Who Tried to Stop Pearl Harbor
The Daily Beast ^ | 12/6 | DAVID J. CASTELLO

George Elliott was one of two servicemen manning a radar station on Oahu the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. When he reported a huge sighting on his radar screen, he was ignored.

At 2 a.m. on April 1, 2001, I was sitting at my computer in my Laguna Beach condo working on a website I’ve long since forgotten when an email popped up with nothing in the subject line.

“Do you know who I am?”

“Another April Fool’s joke,” I thought to myself as I moved my cursor up to click the Delete button. Then I glanced down and noticed the sender: George E. Elliott Jr.

I stopped.

Being a devotee of World War II history, I knew exactly who he was. On the early morning of Dec. 7, 1941, George Elliott and Joseph Lockard were manning a radar unit at Kahuku Point on the mountainous north coast of Oahu in Hawaii when they spotted the first wave of Japanese planes flying in to attack Pearl Harbor.

“Why are you asking me this?” I replied.

“I wrote to PearlHarbor.com and they ignored me, but I see that you are the contact for Pearl-Harbor.com.”

That’s about it. Takes a lot of time to lite off boilers on those old steam plants. Nevada got underway, but beached for fear of blocking the main channel.

The Japanese pilots would have sunk them in deep water where no salvage would have been possible.

The Japanese DIPLOMATIC code was broken before PH. No evidence that the IJN cipher had been broken until some time after. Specifics of the attack were not transmitted to the diplomats.

What FDR expected was an attack on the Philippines or another “Panay Incident”

Years back History channel or some such channel ran a documentary including an old Aussie bloke who said he they had broken the
IJN code, got warning of the attack a couple days in advance and he’d passed the warning on to the Yanks at Manila IIRC. I’d had it saved on VHS but managed to lose it.

My strong impression is that radar was still a bit of a novelty, and wasn’t taken especially seriously or depended on then. More telling to me is the maritime reconnaissance capability that was present and not used.

Pearl Harbor hadn’t happened yet. Complacency bias is nothing new, and I think that was most of what happened.

” I fear I have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible wrath “ I think that’s the full line. I may have paraphrased it a bit.

The diplomatic code was broken thru a series of burglaries. The IJN cipher wad never officially broken until Coral Sea - Midway. That it was broken before Pearl is unproven historically-speaking. The fact that Enigma has been totally de-classified suggests that we know all there is to know.

There is almost nothing to be gained by hiding the attack. Whether Pearl Harbor was prepared for the attack or not, whether it was successful or not, it was still an act of war.

Pear harbor was warned to the point where it was just so much crying "Wolf".

Short of continually being at general quarters, what are you going to do with warnings? You have patrol flights, and patrol outside the harbor, both of which were being done. But there was such a general laxness that all the warning signs were just ignored.

My father was there. Had been there since mid-October. There was a Japanese sub spotted in the harbor a week before the attack.

My father said that every Friday and aircraft carrier and two battleships came into the harbor, and an aircraft carrier and two battleship went out of the harbor. Except on Friday, Dec 5, 1941 - then all the air craft carriers left Pearl Harbor.

Yeah, it wasn’t a surprise attack for everyone.

There is no proof and those creeps who pretend there is are loathsome. Really loathsome. They appear serious, but in reality, are kooks who shouldn’t be seen in public. Someone or something did this. Actually, the allegations are quite treasonous. For decades, these kookisms have surfaced and there is still no proof and will be no proof. The pubic did not want to get involved like I did not know that. No doubt you are a 9/11 truther and no plane hit the Pentagon, either. Disgusting.

They were manning a Westinghouse radar system....

SCR270 perhaps

The scope would show a plane as a blade of grass rising from the base line. The attack looked like an elevated base line with many many blades... at first they thought it was malfunctioning...

Their forewarning would not have made much difference...

Rick Rescorla had said for years that the next attack on the WTC was going to come from the air. His determination on this point is actually why so many survived, particularly from Morgan Stanley, as he forced evacuation drills for their offices in WTC. Regrettably, he was one of the few from that office that did not survive. If you do not know about him, read up and you will be amazed

The US aircraft carriers were delivering aircraft to Wake Island and one other base. The Enterprise missed being caught at Pearl by a single day. Several of her returning aircraft were shot down by Pearl Harbor’s AAA because they arrived right after the Japanese 2nd wave attack.

They were told it was a flight of B-17’s due in from the west coast. Then they were ordered to shut the radar down.

When you are expecting one type of attack — air raids I Manila or sabotage in Hawaii — but get a full-scale naval/air attach at Pearl Harbor instead, everybody looks stupid.

The clues were there, just nobody put them together to reach a usable conclusion.
