Upcoming Hospital Stay - Need Book Recommendation (Vanity)
Me | Today | Me

Posted on 12/06/2016 6:28:58 PM PST by Veggie Todd

After surgery, I'll be in the hospital for about five days. Not sure how much lucid time I'll have, but I want to take a good book. I like Nonfiction, History, Autobiographies, and of course, America.

Normally I'd recommend Gibbon but only five nights? Try this one: The Fall of the Dynasties: The Collapse of the Old Order 1905-1922. It's about how the world changed as a consequence of WWI and the events leading up to it. Four empires that were cornerstones of the old world fell: the Romanov, the Hohenzollern, the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg, and the Ottoman. Sea change in history, very accessible book. Loved it.

Hospitals are horrible places for sick people to be in!

Sometimes there’s no choice; but best to get out as soon as you can.

Unbroken is great. I’d almost forgotten about it.

I recently started a non fiction book called

DREAMLAND The True Story of America’s Opiate Epidemic
By Sam Quinones.

Short chapters that weave in and out of facts and personal stories. Easy to pick up and put down, which might be helpful in your situation. Really interesting.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I typically download a few free samples on my Kindle every week. I have hundreds to browse through.

The Amazon Prime account allows me other options but one is that I get to read 1 free book every month. (I am compelled to disregard the politics of Management there.)

Aside from politics I enjoyed a book called ‘split second’ a few weeks ago.

It’s older now, but Galileo’s Daughter is a great book.

Ghost Soldiers, this is the story of the rescue of the survivors of Baatan...absolutely amazing!

Down the Great Unknown, this is the story of Capt. John Wesley Powell’s expedition by boat through the Grand Canyon in 1869...another amazing story!

Best of luck to you!

About forty years ago I had a problem dealing with insomnia.

I decided to read and not worry about it. Sometimes I read for 20 minutes and then went to sleep, sometimes for three hours. I picked up an annotated Jerusalem Bible printed in the non-column format. I started out and treated it as a book I had never read because the translation was so new to me it read that way.

A great way to renew my knowledge, comfort and understanding. If I was tied in knots by an Old Testament book, I jumped to the Gospels and then went back. I marked pages and I still have this old copy much thumbed.

Have you read the diaries of Lewis and Clark?

I read once that Lewis shot Clark by accident. Surface wound. Did you read anything about that?
