Just hung up on by screener at Mike Gallagher show
970 AM radio | 12/6/16 | Me, myself, & I

Posted on 12/06/2016 9:47:49 AM PST by EinNYC

The talk show host Mike Gallagher is currently discussing how outraged he was when a woman corrected his "Merry Christmas" greeting to her, telling him she "would prefer a 'Happy Holidays' greeting". I also prefer a "Happy Holidays" greeting because his original greeting would not be appropriate to me. I called the show to tell the call screener this (I NEVER call in to radio shows!). I was very respectful and told the call screener that I didn't even need to go on the air, but just wanted to get my opinion across. She took my name. As soon as I said I didn't even need to go on the air, I just wanted him to be aware of my opinion, I heard the phone on her end hung up without a single word. I couldn't believe it.

Meanwhile, Gallagher and a lot of his callers are saying that they feel they should say "Merry Christmas" to everyone and the heck with what the other party thinks. I think that is outrageously ethnocentric, sorry. This is a nation of nations and other peoples' peaceful beliefs should be respected. If you KNOW that the other person is a Jew, you should not wish them a happy [holiday that is not part of their religion]. Might as well tell a Buddhist or a Sikh "Merry Christmas". It would have as much meaning. I also feel that it is a subtle call to conform to the majority.

I'm sure that many years of blatant antisemitism toward me somewhat colors my attitude. In the public schools I attended as a child in the Midwest, I was publicly singled out by the teacher for not singing carols along with the other students in December music classes, and given a negative behavioral notation. I had other students scream at me in December and April that "you killed J.C.!" That was as predictable as the swallows returning to Capistrano. There was a huge push to conform and observe the rituals of Christianity. Judaism or simply being different was not given any consideration.

I do not want to be lumped into one big group. I do not want to have to duck under "The Great Leveler" rather than stick out. Never have, never will.

I have even less respect for Mike Gallagher and his staff now than I even did before.

Thanks for your ignorant and insensitive reply. It reveals a lot about you.

You told the screener you didn’t want to go on the air.

It’s the screener’s job to find people who want to go on the air and are appropriate per the conversation at that time.

He hung up on you. That’s his job, not to waste time on people that aren’t going on the air.............

How about we don’t get all bent out of shape what other people say and instead wish back what holiday we celebrate.

If someone wishes you “Merry Christmas” say “Happy Haunneka” or “Merry Winter Solestice” or what ever back.

Sorry for your experiences.

But, in a nation in which 95% of Americans celebrate Christmas, odds are you would be OK, to wish strangers a Merry Christmas.

I’ve known a number of Jewish people who have wished me a Merry Christmas.

So are you offended at the mention of Christmas???

You’re not obliged to say ‘Merry Christmas.’

The issues concerns the coordinated attack on Christianity with the PC elimination of ‘Merry Christmas’ as one of the tactics.

Might as well tell a Buddhist or a Sikh "Merry Christmas".

I have worked with Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus for years. Not one of them has ever taken offense when I wish them a Merry Christmas.

Nor do I take offense when a Hindu wishes me Happy Diwali.

With all due respect, the call screener is at work.

He is not an intermediary between the host and his listeners. If you had no intention of going on the show, you had no business calling, and rude or not - the guy was working. If he conversed with every person that just wanted a chat, he’d never get anything done. Its a high paced, high pressure environment.

You might as well go through a McDonald’s drive through and make a complaint. Maybe an email would have been a better idea?

As soon as I said I didn’t even need to go on the air, I just wanted him to be aware of my opinion,

*****************

I suspect that was the reason they hung up on you. If they have on air call in guest then
that is the purpose of the screen callers. If you don’t want on the air why spend time
listening to you?

Christmas is a US Holiday commmerorating the birth of a great person, Jesus Christ. It is not a Holiday commemorating a Jew Holiday, or Muslim Holiday, or any other Holiday.

Like the Holidays we have for Columbus, Lincoln, Washington, Martin Luther King etc., Christmas is a day that celebrates CHrist’s birth. Therefore, I fail to see why depictions of his birth in public places is wrong.

Saying Merry Christmas is just that.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

You accept the greeting gracefully, and you don't whine about it.

I have a Muslim friend that wished me a Happy Ramadan and send me Easter greetings complete with a cross.

I appreciate the courtesy of the greeting and I will not return it with a snarky response.

I second the Merry Christmas BTW...

I have Jewish friends who tell me “Happy Hanukkah” and I thank them.

My parents raised me to take such greetings as a compliment because people were being kind enough to say such nice things.

For you, I hope you have a Happy Hanukkah and from me...Merry Christmas.

The word “Christmas” should offend you no more than the word “Hanukkah” does me. That is to say, not at all.

I can’t believe that you posted this waste of time, like anyone cares if you’re offended by someone saying Merry Christmas. Get a friggin’ life.
