Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is to become the first Japanese leader to visit Pearl Harbor, announcing Monday a trip to Hawaii this month for talks with US President Barack Obama. "I will visit Pearl Harbor" with Obama, he told reporters in comments broadcast live on television. Abe, who will be in Hawaii on December 26 and 27, will visit the site of the surprise Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, that began World War II in the Pacific.

“we’ve had to put up with giggling Japanese tourists at the Arizona Memorial for decades......”

I’ve been there several times. Twice there were Japanese there and they seemed quite respectful. Glad I didn’t have your experience. I’m fairly even tempered, but that might cause me to do something that would get me I trouble.

Trump should have made Hillary concede on the U.S.S. Missouri

"She said it was to see what their grandfathers and fathers had done so many years ago.
They had not been told much about it in school."

Sad to say, sanitized as Japanese education might be, those young people likely had a better grasp on the basics than do our own average school children.

Exactly.

The real reason for the commemoration isn’t about the Japanese attack. It’s about our UNPREPAREDNESS for such an attack.

“Never Again” isn’t a motto to be used against oppressors. It’s to be used to remind the OPPRESSED.

You addressed the first half of my comment with your reference to “sins of the father.” How about the second half which would rightfully fall to the following generations?

As to the Japanese visiting, there have been plenty of comments over the years and in this thread concerning less than decorous behavior on their part at the USS Arizona memorial.

I am glad that I have never witnessed the indecorous behavior that you are describing. I have visited the Arizona Memorial on six separate occasions (going back to the year 2000) and I have never seen anyone, Japanese or otherwise, behave disrespectfully. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I will admit, though, when I see the Japanese visitors there, I always wonder to myself, what are they thinking? What is going through their minds at that moment? Given the whitewashing of their history, it may well be the first time that they’ve come face to face with the reality of what their forefathers wrought. It’s probably quite an eye opening experience for them. All in all, it’s probably a good thing that they go there and see it for themselves. Something about those who don’t know their history being condemned to repeat it, and all.

As for Mr. Abe visiting Pearl Harbor, I really don’t have a particular problem with it. But it ticks me off that our POS “president” will defile that sacred ground with his repulsive presence.

I visited the memorial in 1969. There were indeed quite a few Japanese tourists. But, they were on the whole pretty quiet. They took photos, of course, and spoke with one another quietly.

I didn’t speak Japanese, so I have no idea what they were saying. For all I know they could have been saying: “After this, we deserved Hiroshima and Nagasaki;” or, they could have been saying: “This is where we spanked the round-eye Yankee imperialist dogs big time. Banzai!”

“25 years ago Pearl was infested with Japanese tourist of theWW2 era. Most were there to gloat.”

This, and some comment from someone hearing someone “giggle”?

One provides no evidence or even a supposed quote from these people he claims to have heard. The other....that is even less of a thing to go off of. A giggle with no context? Seriously? That’s the extent?

And it is clear whatever rude behavior one saw on so and such day in some year is not the norm as it would be far more well known as Pearl harbor is a major destination for Japanese people visiting Hawaii, and isn’t the responsibility of today’s emperor to take responsibility for anymore than some American doing something uncouth in some other nation.

Some people are just looking to be POd about something far beyond their need to do so.

"Abe, because his ancestors were the attackers and have never taken responsibility for WW2"

It depends on how he handles it. If he is reverend and respectful, good. If not, throw him out. But I never expect someone apologize or take responsibility for the actions of others.

I’ve been to the Memorial on several occasions. From what I observe, all the Japs do is use the ship for a photo op/selfie.

On our last trip, in the theater, having been told to turn off the cellphones by a Park Ranger, one Jap woman spent the majority of the 30 minute documentary shown prior to going to the Memorial, chatting like a magpie, loud enough to turn heads. She just smiled and continued her conversation.

Bathhouse Barry is using this as an excuse to hang out with the ol’ Choom Gang again. His good buddy Titcomb was arrested a few years ago on a prostitution sting. It was first reported he was the one positioning a man but that was quickly scrubbed and the story reinvented to him trolling for females.

“25 years ago Pearl was infested with Japanese tourist of theWW2 era. Most were there to gloat.”

This is not a pull quote from any post I've made. Please don't use somebody else's material in an effort to accuse me of something I didn't do. Since we're on the subject of apologies, I don't think I'm out of line to expect one from you.

This is your post. See the part about “and in this thread”?

See the two examples I cite from this thread?

See where I dont need to apologize?

At a minimum, it is considered common courtesy to ping FReepers when quoting them. I’m done. No apology required or expected.
