I'm a Democrat and I'm ashamed at how tone deaf we've become
Fox News Opinion ^ | 12/3/2016 | Bryan Dean Wright

Posted on 12/03/2016 9:51:50 PM PST by Beave Meister

During a shouting matching Thursday night between top aides of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the President-elect’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway summed up a key reason for why my Democratic Party lost – and will likely continue to lose. “There’s a difference for voters between what offends you and what affects you.”

To understand what she meant, look to the recent developments in Indiana. Millions of voters in the Rust Belt are in awe as 1,100 of their fellow blue-collar workers at Carrier narrowly missed being laid off. Instead of training Mexican replacements, these Hoosiers are celebrating an American paycheck.

In normal times, my fellow Democrats would have celebrated this modest victory in the fight against globalization. They might have even applauded the president-elect for helping make it happen.

But these are not normal times.

Media reaction captures how tone deaf we have become. My party is advancing stories of outrage over the generous tax incentives that Carrier received – some $7.0 million at present.

We’re hearing disbelief that companies can now blackmail Trump into getting their own sweetheart tax deals. Even trade critics like Bernie Sanders are complaining that Trump didn’t save enough jobs from being shipped overseas.

Where is the whole story? 7 Million over 10 years equals 700,000 per year. in addition Carrier hs promised to invest 16,000,000 and increase to 10,000 jobs. Think about the economic power flowing into the local government because of those 1100 jobs. Ye Gods! How can nyonbe be so stupid as to criticize a great deal. Time for those critters to enroll in economics 101.

It is not “Tone Deafness”.
It is the fear of being seen to be “politically Incorrect”, which in lib-world is a horrible, unspeakable crime.

No, no, NO, Mr. Wright. Your colleagues are correct. American voters are too stupid to follow the incredibly wise and nuanced guidance and counsel of liberals. You and the Democrat Party need to take a loud, proud, hard turn to the left, and let the stupid American voter know that that’s where you’re headed. That’s the only way that America will finally wise up and vote for the clearly superior vision of the Democrat Party.

Bernie Sanders said Trump didn't do ENOUGH to keep companies from moving???

Psst, Bernie...he is not President yet and he did help Carrier. He did more than you or Clinton's did...

Left wing lunatics are crying about 7 million dollars that Trump spent to keep over a thousand jobs in the U.S. They apparently think that it would be cheaper to just let those jobs go but..........What about 1000 new people drawing unemployment? How long would it take to use up the 7 million paying those benefits? And they would STILL not have their jobs!

Your question poses a key distinction between Republicans and Democrats (broadly speaking); Pelosi made it clear years ago that simply giving money to those unable or unwilling to work was the same as a job in terms of economic benefits. Sure, the liquor stores and bodegas make a killing, and the government employees keep their jobs, but where does the money come from? As California reverts to Mexican ownership, she doesn’t care; the rest of the states can foot the bill when the last Americans - and American companies - leave California.

“There’s a difference for voters between what offends you and what affects you.”

And not matter what Trump ever did or said that might’ve been offensive, Democrats’ acts and speech are, and always have been, a thousand times worse.

Carrier was moving to Mexico so Paco could ride his burrow to the state of the art factory and get paid $3.00/hr.

Carrier was going to pocket the difference in wages between IA and Mexico.

Raise your hand if you were expecting Carrier to lower the price of their furnaces after the move.

Since the election, we’ve stuck to the same script. His chief strategist is a white supremacist. His cabinet picks are Islamophobic. His business interests are in conflict with Washington protocol. But guess what? Most voters didn’t – and still don’t – care.

Guess again. None of that stuff is true.

“My party is advancing stories of outrage over the generous tax incentives that Carrier received – some $7.0 million at present.”

First of all, since Democrats live their political lives according to labels and because of that they will never get it. The term “Democrat” and “Republican” is not an ideology, but a political party. A liberal is a democrat like a conservative is a republican, is just way to classify a group of voters, not necessarily their beliefs.

What I think Trump has achieved is to separate ideology into three components. The left, the right and the establishment. The establishment is the Democrat and Republican party. These are the John McCain’s and Joe Manchin’s of politics. These are the politicians who will drift in whatever direction benefits the establishment, both financially and ideologically. As an example, Both Conservatives and Liberals have an opinion of what Social Security needs to be, but ultimately that decision is made by the establishment. Basically, the establishment can be defined as “if it is considered a third rail, the establishment owns it.”

But back to Carrier. For Liberals, Carrier leaving represents Americans equally suffering and punishing the company with regulations that will benefit the unions until the company actually does leave and everyone gets fired. Then they blame the establishment republicans. For the establishment, Carrier leaving represents the continuing purchase of cheap goods and then blaming the establishment democrats. For Conservatives, Carrier leaving represents the intrusion of big government on business and blaming the establishment.

The author, is trying to reconcile the establishment, liberal and conservative actions and the liberal voters response. He cannot do that. Although ideologically I am diametrically opposed to Sanders, Sanders is right. Trump is right. The establishment is wrong. This is why they stole the nomination from Sanders and gave it to Clinton.

Carrier staying in the US is a major win for America. Once the regulations are cut back and taxes are lowered, costs will come down enough so that even though the product will still cost more with American workers, the profit will go up and the differential will be better tolerated by the shareholders and management..

Carrier wasn't going to lower their retail price after the move to Mexico and the converse is also true. All of this offshoring has little impact on the consumer either way. Except I believe all product made overseas in the third word is of suspect quality. It is buyer beware.

What offshoring does impact is the taxpayer and it also hastens the end goals of the socialist/communist which hate borders.

Given the trillion or so Obama gave to Solyndra and other green energy companies who quickly went bankrupt, and the money and jobs disappeared, Trump’s actions are not even 1% of Obama’s crony capitalism.

And simply by reversing many of the EPA regulations that were making it impossible for an HVAC company to build here, reversing labor regulations and other rules that were strangling business, it will get much better for many companies - without federal funds/tax breaks.

The front page of the LA Times was slamming this tax deal for Carrier and how rotten it was ..... in the same issue in the Business section extolling the benefits of California giving tax breaks for film companies who stayed in California.

California is a big dairy state, but how can you tax farts? In the end the taxpayers will pay for the ‘fart tax’, because the farmers will raise prices, because they aren’t going to pay that stupid tax.
