Features loud repetitive techno dance beats. The objective is to get wasted and dance for hours or even for days. The attraction is that it’s “underground” and fueled by drugs, usually ecstasy, amphetamines, and LSD. Since underage kids are allowed, there’s no alcohol; the cans and bottles would be impossible to conceal in the event of a police raid. The activities are dangerous and illegal, so the actual time and place-—always in out of the way warehouses, barns, industrial or rural settings-— is released on short notice to a select few who are on a list of designated “cool” people aka “ravers.”
They’re very childlike; they bring light sticks and gadgets to enhance their hallucinations. Many ravers wear the sneakers with the colored lights that flash as they dance. Oooh, trippy!
Ravers are the white suburban peace-and-love counterpoint to violent rappers. Whereas many white kids also go to rap shows, hardly any blacks go to raves. Different drugs, different music.

“Rave culture” was in the newspapers a lot in New Orleans in the 90s, that’s how I know about it. Local authorities wanted to outlaw the concerts after a young girl died on the dance floor (amphetamine heart attack/acute exhaustion.) The oblivious ravers thought she was napping and continued dancing around her body for over 24 hours.

Tips to survive a fire:
1. Note locations of all exits when you first arrive.

2. If the place looks like a firetrap, don’t even stay. Leave immediately. Report your concerns ASAP to the fire marshall.

3. Know that smoke inhalation will render you unconscious before the fire reaches you. Don’t take time to locate the source of the smoke—if you see or smell it, get out. Alert everyone in your path, grab them and drag them with you as you go.

4. Know that two types of toxic gases from smoke tend to separate, leaving a space in between for a few moments. Heavy gas sinks to the floor, light gas drifts upward. The space between the two provides momentary visibility. Take advantage of it. Bend your knees and crouch as you run, keeping your head below the upper level of smoke. Pull your shirt collar up over your nose.

5. A wall of flame is not necessarily a barrier. If it looks like the path ahead of the fire not blocked, don’t stop or turn back! Others will pile up in a heap and everyone will be overcome with smoke. Firemen often find piles of suffocation victims, untouched by flames. Think ring of fire, and you are the circus lion-—walk or jump thru it and keep going! Grab hands of others and drag them with you. You may get burned, but you increase your chances of survival. This of course is a judgement call, not always applicable. Think out of the box, and realize there are things you CAN do.
If your clothes catch fire, get out of the fire, then drop and roll.

6. Please—practice fire drills at your home. Look carefully at your children’s bedrooms and their proximity to exits. Many homes have the master bedroom closer to an exit door, with children’s rooms tucked down the hall. This causes parents to go deeper into the house, to wake the children.
Make sure there is a door or window your children can get out of. Tell your children it’s ok to chuck a lamp thru a window if necessary. ( A child might not want to “get in trouble.”) Make sure everyone knows where to meet once outside.

7. Smoke alarms—have one outside every bedroom door and in kitchen and common areas. Smoke alarms with carbon monoxide detectors cost only a few dollars more.

8. If you have burglar bars and security doors, can you unlock or remove them quickly from inside? Is the key nearby? Burglar bars can be fatal in a fire.
