TERRYTOWN, LA (WVUE) -

Former John Curtis and NFL player Joe McKnight was killed Thursday in a possible road rage shooting at a busy Terrytown intersection, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said it happened just after 3 p.m. at the corner of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard. Two lanes of the roadway were shut down for several hours following the shooting.

Multiple witnesses said a man in an Infiniti sedan pulled the victim from his Audi and shot him multiple times after a verbal altercation. Witnesses said the shooter then waited for police to show up.

Sheriff Newell Normand identified the suspected shooter as Ronald Gasser, 54. Normand said he does not believe McKnight was carrying a gun.

Normand said there was a verbal exchange after a traffic incident, but did not release any other details about the moments leading up to the shooting. He said he will release more details after interviewing witnesses and Gasser.

“It’s the “pulled him out” part that might change. His lawyer may convince a jury that it only looked that way, and in reality the NFL sized decedent jumped out of the car and lunged at his client in a threatening manner.”

That could be the case but why would Gasser get out his car with a weapon and move towards a man still sitting in his car and who had no weapon?

If Mr. Gasser wants to get on the stand and tell his story, he can but I know that intersection quite well and the witnesses there will testify to what they actually saw

It’s Jefferson Parish jury. People sitting on the jury will be from Terrytown, Algiers, Harvey and Marrero.

"Maybe it was self-defense." That's the only explanation I could come up with.

A witness told NOLA.com ... she saw McKnight trying to apologize to another man after some sort of traffic incident.

The witness says the man then pulled out a gun and shot McKnight -- and while standing over him screamed, "I told you not to f*** with me" ... then fired another shot into his body.

Or maybe the guy was just a hair trigger road rage nut.

Self Defense is not going to work.

It amazes me how people just read a headline and believe it. What is this, salon.com? Didn’t the election teach you anything? How would you react if it read, “Joe McKnight Killed By Road-Rage Victim Defending Himself”? The news media is clearly favoring the ballplayer here. Another article said, “McKnight was standing outside of his car when shot.” Standing. That’s a pretty passive verb to put on it when, by the admission of the cops, they don’t yet know what happened. This guy is in the middle of a road-rage incident but he’s just standing there chillin’. RRrriiiggghhhttt. This article says that a 54 year old guy (who looks to weight about 160) pulled this NFL behemoth out of his car. Of course the guy’s friends are going to say that to put him in the best light possible. Nobody is thinking to question this?

I’m not necessarily saying that the surviving half of this altercation is in the right. I’m just pointing out how easy it is for the news media to form your opinion for you if you let them.

Maybe, but self defense is tough to explain when you shoot someone, stand over the him and shout “I told you not to F with me,” just before firing another shot into the body.”

I wonder why he waited for police? Better than fleeing after losing it, I guess.

He is lucky the crowd did not rip him into pieces and feed him to the alligators in the canal that is one block away.

IF that happened. It’s one guy versus several of the deceased’s friends. Who do you think is going to get their story heard. Initial reports are usually wrong.

I’m not trying to take this guy’s side. I’m trying to get people to THINK instead of just react.

The part that I find odd is that the guy was out of control with rage one minute, then as soon as he shoots McKnight, he’s calmly waiting for police. Sounds odd. Maybe shooting a man sobers you up quickly?

That doesn’t sound like “road rage.” It sounds more like chase-down.

Bullet trajectory will tell much in this case as the “Gentle Giant” hands up don’t shoot fairytale in Ferguson did.

My nephew was QB at John Curtis during part of Joe McKnight’s days. Everyone had great respect for Joe and loved him.

Where on earth did you get the idea that McKnight’s friends were there to witness the shooting?

Road rage is a weird thing. When it takes you, you no longer think. I’ve been chased by fathers with kids in the car for some perceived traffic insult. Who would put himself or his children in danger to address someone he will probably never see in his life again? This falls under the category people not thinking. But there should be cameras facing this intersection, so we’ll see what happened.

So true. I once heard a DJ interviewing callers describing road rage instances. One lady said she was running late to a very important appointment when somebody cut her off in traffic, so she started following them, tail-gating and blowing her horn for the next half hour to teach them a lesson. I kept thinking "but what about the very important meeting you were already late for?" She completely lost sight of the big picture and let her ego make decisions, instead of using good judgment.

Name is not familiar to me.

Sadly!

Just shows you how many mentally imbalanced individuals there are out there. This white man felt “dissed”, so somebody had to pay.
