The 5 Best-Selling Handguns of 2016
The Motly Fool ^ | 26 Nov, 2016 | Leo Sun

2016 looks like it will be a record year for gun sales. The number of NICS background checks for firearm purchases has risen annually for 18 straight months, hitting 22.2 million at the end of October versus 23.1 million in 2015.

Analysts expect Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ:SWHC) and Sturm Ruger (NYSE:RGR) -- the only two publicly traded gunmakers in the U.S. -- to respectively grow their revenues by 26% and 13% this year. Let's take a look back at the five top selling handguns of the year, as listed by Gunbroker.com, and what they tell us about today's American firearm market.

1. Smith & Wesson M&P Shield The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield, which was introduced in 2005, is a lightweight, concealable pistol which is encased in a polymer frame. The Shield comes in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 full auto calibers, and is widely used by law enforcement and military personnel. The Shield is often praised for its slim profile, ergonomics, ease of use, and overall accuracy. As a striker-fired pistol, it lacks a protruding hammer in the back, making it easier to conceal and carry.

Not well written. Author states increased sales in 2016, but numbers cited were higher for 2015. They also refer to 45 ACP as “45 full auto”. The pistol citations are obviously written by someone else who knew what hey were writing about.

Obama must secretly own shares in these gun manufacturers. He is personally responsible for the record gun sales. He keeps up the anti gun bullshit and people go out and buy guns. Even a smalll child can figure this one out. The uniparty puts the bullshit on his TelePrompTer and he just reads it.

I would like to get a Sig P226, A Colt Delta Elite and a full sized Glock in 10mm, I can’t remember all the model numbers.

Actually a whole lot more but right now I will have to get by with my two Browning Hi-Powers. They are perfectly satisfactory but would prefer a newer pistol.

I do have maybe 10 more but none of them are first class defensive pistols.

Don’t you know your most popular handgun cartridges? There’s the .45 Full Auto, .40 Child Killer, 9mm Armor Piercing, .357 compensating-for-something, and of course the .22 Anti-Tank.

Or maybe I shouldn’t get my gun info from Salon...

I have a Fusion Firearms 6” Longslide 1911 in 10mm. Fusion is a small custom shop started by Bob Serva after he sold Dan Wesson Firearms.

At one time I owned 3 10mm autos. Two stainless Delta Elites and an Auto Ordinance. Both Colts were about as good as it gets.

The Auto Ordinance was also OK. I also owned several 1911’s in .45 atuo. All of them Colts except for one Auto Ordinance.

The AO .45 was not as well made as their 10mm. They probably figured it needed to be made better. Their .45 auto was fairly good and also accurate. The one problem was there was a pit inside the barrel. I suspect it was a bubble in the casting or forging or whatever it was.

They sent me a new barrel and let me keep the old one. The new barrel was perfect but never as accurate as the one with the pit.

So concealed carry pistols are the top sellers. The only one on this list I own is a Ruger LCP, and I’m not crazy about it. My carry gun is a Walther PPK/S.

I assume by “.45 full auto”, the writer meant .45 ACP, as opposed to .45 GAP. But maybe I’m giving his too much credit.
