We need a capable civilian as secretary of defense now more than ever.
He is a civilian. And we need to stop losing, and win. Mattis is a winner.
Budgets, white papers, and service rivalries, not to mention the interagency meetings and White House meddling — these tasks are not what you go to Jim Mattis for.
He will have two staffs to do that: OSD and the Joint Chiefs. He only needs to provide winning leadership.
Not only does the role of secretary of defense not play to Mattis’ strengths, but success in that role would compromise much that we admire most in him: his bluntness, clarity, and single-minded focus on warfighting.
Huh? You just sold me. Mattis is the eminently qualified because of his single-minded focus on warfighting. None of the generals or admirals will be able to BS him.

The DoD and the JCS are both bureaucratic nightmares of waste and stupidity. The SECDEF should be someone who hates waste and has an extensive understanding of the military with recent experience, and national defense. Most of the idiots (civilians, although there are some actual service members that don’t have a clue) within the DoD have no recent military experience and are so full of themselves.
Yep, if he is still on the board of Theranos, that shows real lack of judgement. Theranos is a story of fraud and scientific misrepresentation.
I could see being suckered in at the beginning, but the writing has been on the wall for quite some time with Theranos. Heck, as a member of the board he may even be personally liable.

Mattis should not be SecDef because he committed unlawful command influence (UCI) in the persecution of the Haditha Marines, heroes defending their lives. Mattis tried to tip the scales of justice in favor of a politicized defense department attacking normal warfighters at the behest of a hateful media.
In my mind he is thoroughly discredited and should go noplace near the SecDef’s role.
After all of the horrible interference and folly inflicted by Obama and his team of social engineers and softly accepted by the most recent crop of General/Flag officers, we need Mad Dog to clean the place out.
Matthis sounds like someone the Democrats would pick for a cabinet position, not conservatives.

Mattis came back from his meeting with Trump and went straight to county jury duty here in WA State. Amazing guy. I guess he lives a couple miles from me but I don’t know the house.
